Levon Helm

Greatest singing drummer, in my book...and what a legacy he has left. I think I'll forsake the usual Band material today and give Neil Young's "On The Beach" a long listen.

Ignore the top part and scroll to the bottom of the page for a great concert video of Levon singing what must have been one of his favorites: ... ml?hpid=z8

+1. There's not a lot to say that isn't obvious.

That is a pretty short list, especially if you don't count people that weren't drumming and singing lead at the same time...

Kelly Keaggy - sang lead maybe half the time
Roger Taylor - sang lead on a few songs
Peter Criss - ditto
Don Henley - sang lead half the time - not sure about greatness
Dave Grohl - did most of his lead singing while playing guitar
Phil Collins - I think most of his singing was as a front man and not a drummer
Karen Carpenter - not sure if she always sang and drummed at the same time, but certainly did sometimes.

Helm certainly had everyone covered in the voice department except for Karen Carpenter. I would have to let a drummer weigh in on his drumming - seemed pretty good to me.

Helm's book This Wheel's On Fire is required reading for rock fans. Some great stories in there. He was the heart of The Band and will be missed.

as far as great singing drummers, don't forget Pete Rivera from Rare Earth.

The Chris Mars solo albums are pretty good.

My parents took me to see The Last Waltz when it first came out; it changed my life. At the time I was listening to shit like Barry Manilow and The Bay City Rollers, and thought it was good.

Then I saw Levon singing "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The next time I listened to Barry Manilow it sounded like something composed by and for half-bright leprechauns.

So - thanks for the intervention, Levon. Who knows? Without it, I might be listening to Z-104 right now.

Good call - a band that is often forgotten.

Other singing drummers:

Buddy Miles-- perhaps more of a singer than a drummer

Ginger Baker sang "Pressed Rats and Warthog." Not exactly the best Cream song.
