Duck Dunn died in his sleep May 13th while on tour in Tokyo. At least he went peacefully and while doing what he lived to do. We should all be so lucky.
If you don't know him from anywhere else, you know him as the bassist for the Blues Brothers (Show Band & Revue!). As a kid, his bass lines were an inspiration to me before I knew who he was or that I even wanted to play the instrument. He ranks right up there with Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, James Jamerson and Bootsy Collins on my personal list of the all-time greatest bassists.
He leaves behind a list of credits
longer than a Wall Street indictment and his brilliant body of work is sure to shake the asses of whole generations of soulful cats and kittens who have yet even to be born. As long as humanity has soul, Duck Dunn's influence will be felt.
Rest peacefully, man. Thanks for taking us to school.
