RIP Donald "Duck" Dunn

Music news, rumors, what you're listening to, how you're listening to it and whether it's all on the up-and-up.

RIP Donald "Duck" Dunn

Postby Uncle_Leaver » Mon May 14, 2012 8:23 am

Duck Dunn died in his sleep May 13th while on tour in Tokyo. At least he went peacefully and while doing what he lived to do. We should all be so lucky.

If you don't know him from anywhere else, you know him as the bassist for the Blues Brothers (Show Band & Revue!). As a kid, his bass lines were an inspiration to me before I knew who he was or that I even wanted to play the instrument. He ranks right up there with Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, James Jamerson and Bootsy Collins on my personal list of the all-time greatest bassists.

He leaves behind a list of credits longer than a Wall Street indictment and his brilliant body of work is sure to shake the asses of whole generations of soulful cats and kittens who have yet even to be born. As long as humanity has soul, Duck Dunn's influence will be felt.

Rest peacefully, man. Thanks for taking us to school.

I don't think I've come across a cooler bass player. And I know to you guitarists, that's not saying much but Dunn was amazing.

I'm saddened to think he had to continue to tour at 70 years old, hopefully he was doing it because he loved performing and not because he was never paid what he was worth by record companies.

If you're our age, anyway.
Youngsters and whipper-snappers might know him better as Kenny Powers's theme music. His bass is what's holding you down while Freddie King's guitar punches you in the face: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_ONyukSLqA

And this is one of my fave YouTube discoveries ever: Booker-Loo!!
Duck really gets cookin' around the 2:50 mark.

Duck once said he played bass because it had 4 strings and the guitar had 2 strings too many so it was confusing. I have to smile every time I see that because that's why I started on bass.

The man knew how to hold it down and move it along. Or perhaps I should say The Man.

I was wondering why (post 1965) Booker T. & The M.G.'s was trending today on Yahoo. And now I know. Incredible legacy.

Duck was such a true bassist. Got to see him once playing with a crusty-ass Neil Young. Dunn was way cool.
