George Michael's "Listen Without Prejudice" is not only better than anything Wham ever put out, it's actually a very good album. Back when I was a snobby Pitchfork-type, before there was such a thing as Pitchfork, I got a bit of shit for my "Listen Without Prejudice" praise. It's a very good album. By any standards.

Holy fuckin' fuck! Wha??? "Viva Hate" was pretty good, but Morrissey isn't even shy about admitting that he went out and found a Marr acolyte to write the guitar parts. If The Smiths ever do a reunion tour I'll cash in my 401k just to buy a ticket but I can't be bothered with Morrissey solo. The Smiths were
Morrissey and Marr. They aren't separable.
To the OP, I'd say Frank Black has created quite a catalog of great albums, by volume better than the Pixies but none of them better than any one Pixies album, but "Pistolero" comes close. If you told me that you thought it was better than "Bossanova", I wouldn't argue. But really, Frank Black was
the Pixies, so the fact that his solo music is almost as good as the Pixies shouldn't come as any great surprise.
Soft, LOUD, soft, LOUD!!! The man virtually invented modern alt rock.
