Science-fiction-themed music

Postby Kenneth Burns » Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:59 am

I was reading Isaac Asimov's I, Robot, which made me think about the Alan Parsons Project's I Robot (which I've never heard), which made me think about Jefferson Starship's Hugo-nominated Blows Against the Empire (which I've never heard).

Which made me think about other albums or songs with science fiction themes. A fine example is Rush's "Red Barchetta," a lovely, well-written vignette about a nostalgic romantic who lives in a dystopian police state. Another is Styx's "Come Sail Away," which -- spoilers! -- turns out is about aliens. There's also Styx's hilarious Kilroy Was Here album, with its job-stealing robots.

Thomas Dolby's wonderful debut The Golden Age of Wireless seems to dabble in what we now call steampunk, though the lyrics are vague. There's Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, plus "Space Oddity" and other tunes I probably don't know about. There's Elton John's "Rocket Man."

What else?

There's great stuff along these lines in the Grandaddy catalog ("I'm on Standby," etc.).

Pretty much every Boston album cover, no? Not the music, just the covers.

There's Pete Townshend's Psychoderelict, which is just awful, as well as Townshend's The Iron Man (based on the Ted Hughes book), which is also awful but not as awful.

Love space-rock. How about Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun"? Europe's "The Final Countdown" is always good for an air guitar-along.

There's Stones tunes like "2000 Light Years From Home" and "2000 Man," which I maybe like even better as a Kiss song.

Pink Floyd seem to like sci-fi topics/themed songs:
-Dark Side of the Moon (album)
-Astronomy Domine
-Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
-Interstellar Overdrive

At one point they were approached about recording original music for 2001: A Space Odyssey. That may have made them the ultimate sci-fi band of all time. Although it is hard to imagine other music than what Kubrick used since it seems so perfectly aligned with the movie.

Steely Dan also have a lot of sci-fi themed tunes.
Pretzel logic is about time travel. Fagen and Becker are both sci-fi nuts.

"As Journey says, 'Some will win, some will lose...'" Can you break down the fundamentals of life any simpler?

A couple times a week I listen to a prog rock station at work, and the half that doesn't sound like Dragonforce sound like science non-fiction, as in, they are extra-terrestrials. Gong, anyone?

Hard to believe these weren't already mentioned:

The Byrds: Mr. Spaceman

Donovan: The Intergalactic Laxative

Well, the 2nd one is pretty obscure, but the first one is well known, isn't it?
