Rachmaninoff - love him or hate him?

I am in the love him camp.

"The walking scowl" sounds good to me.

Does anyone really hate Rachmaninoff? I mean, now that the mid-20th century backlash against romanticism has passed?

I remember going to see the Madison Symphony play Isle of the Dead. I had never heard it before. It was an unforgettable experience. The 5/8 rhythms were perfectly evocative of a small boat rocking in unsettled waves on the sea, as the rhythmic groupings shifted from 2+3 to 3+2.
