Best engineered analog album?

Music news, rumors, what you're listening to, how you're listening to it and whether it's all on the up-and-up.

I usually chose more new (or used) albums over saving money and buying better equipment. Not sure if I could have heard the difference that a good engineer made.

Ah, but a well-engineered album should sound good (at least relatively) on any system.

Please tell me you just came up with that.

It's all mine.

I've been assigned to review a new book about the Smiths and I don't much care for their stuff. Can I use that line if I cite you (so to speak)?

Collection development librarians will salute you, assuming it gets past my editors intact.

I know - I guess I never paid that much attention. Frankly, during my prime record buying years (78-90) I probably didn't understand what an engineer did anyway as opposed to a producer.

Bump Alan Parsons for sure. His working on Dark Side of the Moon helped make it, IMHO, one of rock's perfect albums and overall best engineered. That album still sounds groundbreaking and killer.

Bump Bruce Swedien too. Another unbelievable talent that rarely gets his due.

I can listen to any Roger Nichols' engineered music. That guy is flat out a genius in putting his sound perfection into reality. His inventing the Wendel drum machine alone would put him a the very top of my list.

Any love for Tom Dowd with his work at Atlantic Records? The Allman Brothers, Derek and the Dominoes, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and many more were engineered by Dowd.
