Jade Monkey

Postby radtek » Thu Aug 23, 2007 5:50 pm

Anybody know when the Jade Monkey (formerly Lake Edge) on the corner of Cottage Grove Rd and Atwood will open?
And any idea on the "type" of bar it might be?? Upscale? Average? Martini? Food?

Sign says "opening this summer". Summer's on it's way out.

I will say this, they are working their butts' off on remodeling. It looks like it's going to be a neat place!

I asked the muralist the same thing the other day when I was walking by -- when do you open? He said "soon." That was a couple weeks ago, so....

I also asked what the Jade Monkey character meant, and he said they just thought it was cool. So I don't have a clue what kind of bar it'll be either. I hope they make good martinis.

I heard they were having an opening party for friends/family about a week ago - maybe they'll be open this weekend?

They're opening this weekend (says the owner - my husband stopped by to ask earlier this week), and according to an article in the Cap Times, it will be an "Asian-infused retro cocktail lounge." I think we're going to stop by on Saturday night.

The "Asian-infused" part has something to do with showing martial arts movies - they have a lot of TVs.

A hip/trendy spot on the east side, let alone along a strip of what most would consider dive bars?!? No way.
I'm not saying I wish for all of Madison to be full of what some might consider to be "kitsch", and there's nothing wrong with your standard no-nonsense no-concept bar, but for god sakes the pre-willy st. east side definitely needs some flavor, some diversity in the bar scene.
Bless 'em for giving the east side a chance.
A small bar right next to a low-traffic strip mall? Will this be the east sides answer to the Le Tigre Lounge?

I just can't believe that Hammer Time didn't make it in that spot.

At first I thought that they'd be doomed in that location. But now I'm not so sure. I wish them luck, especially because I live so close.

Why would you say that? Typical Madison pessimism whenever someone tries something new or different.
Thing is, it's only 1600 sq. ft. and it's from a reputable business owner who's probably not short on resources. I could understand your view if it were a big risk, but this isn't the Blue Chalk Club we're talking about here.

It's a GOOD location for a new bar. Down the street is the VFW for older people and VFW-types, and the Packer Inn which is sort of blue-collar and the little white bar across the road which seems like younger blue-collar. That leaves a nice opening for the Jade Monkey. Everybody can go get something to eat at the Mexican take-out. Our own little east-side entertainment strip!

i was there last night. very cool decor (fish tanks, custom booths, crazy hanging lamps) and a kick ass jukebox. retro asian swank with a laid back east side vibe. they also have a pool table and a shuffle puck game (with salt). should be a cool place to drink on that side of town.

Sounds neat. Anyone know if they're planning a website to promote the place?
