Legendary Drunks of Madison

Postby lonesomejohnny » Wed Nov 21, 2007 3:21 pm

An account of Madison's first drunkard:

Nicknamed "Turtle Toes", Lived down by the river, shoeless and hatless, a provider of public spectacle, died on a bender when his clothes caught fire. Why is there no monument to this man who paved the way for all of us? Truly ahead of his time.

I smell a "Real Men of Genius" commercial coming.

I saw a guy who will quickly become legendary if he keeps at it. He was drunk on an afternoon and crossing directly in front of speeding traffic on East Johnson at State the other day. He stumbled back and forth slowly, causing drivers to slam their brakes. The last car in his path stopped just in time, but the car behind it was not so lucky and pounded right into the car in front of it.

The homeless person, having arrived at the sidewalk and completely oblivious to the fact that he more or less directly caused an accident, looked at the scene and said something like "brutal" and then asked everyone for change.

I nominate Pete Kaesberg, famous for being the hardest-working drummer in Madison and B-Side representative.
This child of Bacchus would drink an entire bottle of gin before a show.
During the show.
And after.
Never missed a beat.

In my days of hanging out at the Silver Dollar, there was a guy named Mitch.

To look at this guy you think he was a lawyer, or some other business professional. But, he was a trust fund drunk that would ring up a bar tab that would reach several hundred dollars in each week.

Who was the drunk politician that fell down the stairs at Gennas a few years ago? It made the paper.

I'd nominate Denny McKernan and his various associates, known to Kyle and a few other Motorz as "The Superfans" - these guys don't feel a weekend has ended well unless it has ended badly. I have learned much from them.

Honey.

She was a streetperson that would show up in March and stay until the snow flew. She could have walked out of William Kennedy's Ironweed novel.

Of course, Bob Schuh (former of Jocko's Rocketship) has to be near the top of any list. I heard his college career including vomiting as Bucky Badger.

The "Superfans" made me doubt the structural integrity of floor of the Slipper Club. They had me mentally practicing emergency exit strategies in my mind during your ska show. They are professionals.

Some classic Mitchisms:

"Don't sweat the small things."

"Your to much buddy, your to much."

"Your going to piss off the Pope and turn him Jew."

"The plane is on the tarmac."
