What's your poison?

Postby Henry Vilas » Thu Jul 09, 2009 1:41 pm

Beer is my drink of choice. Mainly ales, usually IPAs, although I often have a glass of dry red wine during dinner. Not much hard liquor, but in the summer some rum and tequila. Mojitos and Dirty Bananas with an amber rum (Appleton or Mount Gay). Tequila - Don Julio Añejo straight up, preferably in a brandy snifter. (Actually I drink Julio year round.)

Yours?

Belgian Beers. The Whites, Trippels and whatever else says Belgian somewhere on the bottle. I also like the Hoppaliscious lately and most Lake Louie brews. When I want to booze it up its almost always Jame-o.

If you add Vokda to this list, it might as well be mine.

Lake Louie Beer year round; whatever flavor Tom gets to the shelves.

I've been buying way too many New Belgium Fat Tire 22-oz. bombers lately.

In the winter, it's Bulleit bourbon on the rocks with a couple olives.

White Russians over the holidays.

George Dickel whiskey and ginger ale (George & Ginger).

Eagle Rare, neat.

On the hot days of summer, an extremely cold can of High Life in a can cooler.

Beer and wine give me a wicked headache if I have more then one. So I usually have none.

Jack & Coke is my standard goto. I can have enough to get stupid and be productive the next day too.

I also like :

Laird's Applejack. Good enough for George Washington and all that.
The few things I've had from Death's Door and Yahara Bay (gotta go local when you can).
Unfiltered sake but I have to be careful.
And lately the really nice tasting but nearly impossible to ask for (ri)1.

Pre-dinner cocktail: 1 Belv/Ketel/Goose, etc. on the rocks w/olives.

Nice dinner: Bottle of red-cab/pinot/syrah, most Span/Ital reds.

Run-of-the-mill meals, home, bars: Fresh beer-love Belgians, WI crafts, and canned piss for grillin' outside once in awhile.

After nice meals: Mac 12/18 (or any other good Speyside or Highland) neat, Islays on the rocks, Irish on the rocks, decent Port or dessert wine once in awhile, Strega if Italian and they have it.

Shots: Always Jameson, sometimes Jager, Kamikazes, and Woo-woos.

I mostly enjoy the wide world of beer, any and all styles. I probably would rank German-style lagers as my favorite, but I can't think of a beer category that I don't at least like in some instance. I tend to favor WI-based breweries above all else.

When it comes to wine, I like the darker reds - Wollersheim's Domaine du Sac is my go-to option, in sticking with the WI-based bias. I haven't developed much of a palate for white wines but I do like a sweet Riesling from time to time.

I like just about every variety of whiskey, usually on the rocks. Chivas Regal is my blended Scotch of choice, whereas Mac 12 is my recently-appointed single malt. Following a trip to the distillery last year, Bushmill's Black Bush has entered the rotation. I also really, really like Death's Door White Whisky. I don't really drink any other hard liquor, though I have a bottle of Death's Door vodka that I'll have on the rocks on occasion.

Bud Light and the occasional box o'wine.

Both of which I can drink in large quantities w/o being sick. But throw a couple PBRs in there and look out.

I had a Margarita on the rocks and a couple Miller Lites earlier along with a shot of Jack at the bar. Right now I'm relaxing with a glass of Black Opal Cabernet that I started with my dinner (spinach, salmon, walnut & blueberry salad with a raspberry vinagrette--I know red wine with fish, what the hell?).

Other summer drinks that I enjoy include Bell's Oberon and the occasional Arnie Palmer.

Beer- I tend to drink locally wherever I am. Maine has a number of good breweries (Geary, Shipyard, Gritty's), although most are based in Portland. Last week I was drinking Yuengling in DC, which is semi-local. I do miss Autumnal Fire though.

Gin- Beefeater. A cold B&T in the summer cannot be beat.

Vodka- partial to Grey Goose, although Belvedere and Chopin also do the trick. Also with tonic and lime, in the summer.

Tequila- partial to Tradicional. Don't like anejos; they taste too much like whiskey, and I can't stand whiskey. 1800 Blanco is also ok. Right now I have a bottle of Corralejo that we brought back from Isla that isn't too bad.

Rum- doesn't matter, as long as it's in a mojito or dacquiri with a lot of fruit.

Whiskey- see above. Used solely to marinate beef.

Wine- partial to big reds- Shiraz and Zins. Especially good with a steak. Cabs are also good, but merlot is a bit flabby. I like a good pinot noir, but good ones are pretty pricey. Don't care much for French Burgundies, although their Bordeaux rules. As for whites- Viognier is my favorite, although a crisp sauvingon blanc can also be refreshing in the summer. Same rule with chardonnay as with pinot noir, although unoaked chardonnays can be pretty good at a lesser price (if you can find them).

It's about time someone asked. I first ran into the DB 'round twenty five years ago in Jamaica. It's a blender drink. Overripe bananas, rum, Tia Maria (I use home made Kalhlua instead), milk, bar syrup and lots of ice. It's a meal in itself.
