...and speaking of goofball shots

Postby narcoleptish » Thu Feb 23, 2012 2:47 pm

I mentioned in the craft thread of my annoyance at having to make multi-ingredient goofball shots when I was bartending. Which reminded me of a friends recent experience ordering irish carbombs. He received a stern rebuttal, and no shot, from a bartender in Chicago apparently of Irish descent. When we discussed this later with other friends, we were told this happens in Madison as well and someone named a couple places/bartenders, I think one guy was at Dexter's.

This happens to be a goofball shot that I like (taste and buzz-wise) although I rarely order them in a bar due to my past aversion to these types of orders......but give me a fucking break. If one of these self-righteous cocktail cops wants to school me on the worldwide ramifications of associating an unfortunate piece of Irish history with alcohol, then this half+ Irishman will take my lesson in the parking lot. When we're done I'll even give him a cup to take his teeth home in.

Wheeew.... Donald gets riled up over poll workers, I get there over shots.

I had a friend who wanted to create a similar shot called the Twin Towers; I cannot remember what he wanted the boozes to consist of, however.

My rule of thumb while bar-tending: if you order a shot that requires me to grab more than 3 bottles and one of those is fruit juice, I'm going to walk away...this decision is constantly reevaluated depending on how busy I am or how much boob is involved.

I always have time for Irish-car bombs. Because that means I'm having one with you. However, if you ask me "do you KNOW how to make an Irish car-bomb?" in an annoying valley-girl voice I will either respond: "Yes. With motor oil and fertilizer." or I will proceed to make one in front of you, then drink it and walk away.

Heh. For me it's movie-goers who chaw on popcorn (or styrofoam packing peanuts, for all I know) while the movie is playing. (As far as trailers and other ads, I do not care.)

But audibly chawing in a public theater is like farting into a respirator – a singular act of selfishness that is really just fine, I guess, unless there happens to be anyone else nearby who needs to breathe the same air.

Save the quaint movie traditions for the next time you're born in the 1940s.

At least you don't have to run it through the blender.

I was told by a friend who spent time in Ireland that that is definitely not an appropriate shot to order over there.

How about a a B-52 shot dropped in a glass of Long Island Iced Tea. And of course you do them in pairs. Chase it down with a shot of apple pie liquor dropped in a glass of Budweiser (to signify the jingoism of the years to follow).

Is that too complicated? WELL SO IS AMERICA.

Yes, I suppose, you might run into a few survivors.

I've never heard of a German bartender refusing to make a Dead Nazi.

Or an Italian leaving a party that's serving Whopatooli.

Will a Frenchman drink a White Flag? http://www.idrink.com/v.html?id=11247

Do American Indians have a sore spot for Manhattans?

Would Anna Wintour turn up her nose at a Cosmopolitan?

If anyone should have an issue with ICB's it should be the English.

You know, it sounds like I hated it, but I never really did. I still go back and work summers during Volleyball Season for some extra scratch. I was lucky enough to always work at bars where I could be pretty mouthy with a younger crowd have fun with it. The Missus however, hit the wall, she did fine dining then managed Bar Louie in Wrigleyville for the better part of 8 years and now many years later still gets a sour face when the topic is brought up.

Good to hear.

I usually waited a little too long to leave my various, public-facing jobs. By then I had my time proven stereotypes arranged and understood and would dabble in exacted professional vengeance. It left me dirty.

The Woman finally got me to try a shot consisting of vanilla Dr. Mcgillicuddy's mixed with cranberry juice.

How those come together to taste exactly like cherry cheesecake still baffles me.

It's now the only shot I'll do that's not straight liquor.

It IS delicious and she was right. I've now conceded it in print.

I need to go lie down.
