Anyone carry a flask anymore?

Postby Twinner » Fri Mar 02, 2012 2:26 am

I've been carrying one with different whiskeys for a few years. The only time it leaves the house is for events with friends, not with me to work or any other reason. I've received a couple more so now I'm up to three flasks. I don't want to seem like a drunk if were to bring all three. It's easier to grab a bottle at random from the liquor cabinet rather than labor over which pair or three flavors to bring.

They don't allow glass on the Wisconsin River and several other waterways where you can camp so I take a flask for that.

If it's going to be an extended trip I'll take two. Because it's good to share.

Otherwise no.

My father was a college student during Prohibition. I also believe he did a bit of bootlegging for his dorm mates (like marijuana in the 60s, we agreed). He said the recognized way to carry your flask back in his time was to get one of those big beaver-fur coats and have pockets added on the inside of the sleeves, enough pockets to carry several flasks down each arm.

When I hit up a show at the Project Lodge I usually am sporting a flask of Black Bush in my jacket pocket. It's easier than bringing a couple bottles of beer and you don't need to worry about tossing empties afterwards. I own two flasks, one a gift from a friend in college that I regularly used for Badger football games when I was a student. The other was a groomsman gift from a friend's wedding. They're also nice for camping and tailgates.

I have an antique wicker covered glass whiskey flask that my southern gentleman grandfather used to carry. I have tried to use it but the silver cap is cracked. He also had a miniature silver julep cup he carried in a custom made leather case.
Both were used well and often, from their condition. I trot them out every year at Derby along with his Irwin S Cobb Four Roses recipe book with the floweriest recipe for mint juleps ever written.
For myself, I use a 1960's era travel bar. One of those briefcases with shakers, bar tools and space for bottles. It has a tiny key in a tiny envelope that says "Your key to Adventure!" over a jet plane graphic, which is what sold me on it!

I have my Slayer flask for church.

My buddy has a flask for Badger games that looks like binoculars.

I have a rather fancy suede-wrapped 6oz stainless steel flask that was a random gift from a trustafarian with whom I used to gallivant about the town. I didn't think it was anything horribly special, but it always seems to get compliments from anyone that sees it.

It has a spot for my initials to be engraved, but I decided that I'd prefer to be able to deny ownership if needed at some point.

I almost never carry it, really. I think the last time that I brought it out was when I had some of the 23 year old Rittenhouse Rye and I wanted to share it with some friends at a barn dance.

I also have one of those leather-wrapped 6oz stainless steel flasks. About the only time I ever use it is during deer season.
