Meat Raffles in Madison ?

Postby Henry Chinaski » Sun Jan 13, 2013 11:12 pm

I've successfully introduced my friend to some of the finer aspects of Sconnie culture, The Friday Night Fish Fry and Brandy Old Fashioneds. But she has never been to a meat raffle. Are there any places in Madison that partake in this activity? A brief search of the interwebs was unsuccessful. I know that usually these aren't really advertised, so any information would be appreciated.

I think I remember signs on occasion outside the Villa Tap notifying folks they were holding a meat raffle, but I've never attended. Give 'em a call.

The Baldwin St Grill had one in the past on Sunday afternoons. Not sure if they are still happening.

Meat Raffles would be a good name for a band.

Not as good as "Free Beer," but "Meat Raffles" on the marquee might get people in the door.

WTF? I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life and I've never heard of a meat raffle. I feel totally cheated.

Meat raffles I've attended or seen advertised within the last few years:
Rustic Tavern
Villa
Baldwin Street Grille
Pleasant Springs Pub
Schneid's
Licari's
Rev Jim's Roadhouse
Slice's
JoBeck's
Paul's Neighborhood Bar

Not all are regularly scheduled. Best to just call and ask.

I've also heard of a SloPig-"sponsored" meat raffle at The Malt House on January 26th. This doesn't sound like your typical WI dive bar raffle, though.

Buy a very cheap raffle ticket (usually a buck), potentially win some meat. I've entered one in my life (at The Old Fashioned), and won a "ham grenade" from Miesfeld's in Sheboygan. Pretty solid batting average.

According to Wiki, they are common in other countries, but only seem to happen in Wisconsin and Minnesota in the States. Andrew Zimmern went to one in Minnesota on his show.

So you can just walk in, and buy a raffle ticket for a dollar? Do you have to wait around to see if you won? Do you have to buy anything else? Googling and the Villa Tap facebook page didn't give me those details...

The Country Corners bar on AB just north of 12/18 has one occasionally, maybe once a year or so. I've never been in but see the sign when it's up for a few weeks at a time.
