suffering trolls

Postby jjoyce » Mon May 21, 2007 4:45 pm

Some so-called online community experts have suggested lately that trolls should be approached quietly (like horse whispering or something) and treated respectfully.

I'm of two minds on the issue: Either ignore them, or take them on directly. The latter option has proven to at least be entertaining on this and other boards.

I don't have anything to contribute here in regards to troll theory...but could someone post a list of the trolls here? I'm a little sporadic when it comes to being around here, and a cheat sheet would be of value.

My personal preference is a pretty much PDNFTT, but some people seem to enjoy the drama, and it definitely can make for some entertaining threads here and there.

For whatever reason, though-- and I'm sure some forons have strong opinions about what sorts of "reasons" there might be --the true trolls don't seem to last long here and the ones that remain are really not that disruptive.

I agree, this is the noise we should all make with our tongues/lips when dealing with trolls.

A forum without trolls would be boring, and ignoring them makes them cry.

I only pop in from time to time, but lately I have become quite sick of the banter that develops in every thread that one or two people have to take over with personal insults.
Book Police in particular has made it clear that he has a personal vendetta against people whose views he despises...namely one or two people who can be annoying but could hardly be called trolls.

But whatever...if this discussion board can't be discussion-based because the main participants simply have to rape everyone verbally that disagrees with them...and everyone is happy with that....

there are other places on the internet to talk.

Here's the article to which I assume Jason's referring, FWIW.

The determination of who is and who isn't a troll is often a subjective opinion. One man's troll is another's quirky character.

- - - - - No it isn't.
It is!
- - - - - It is not.
Look, you just contradicted me.
- - - - - I did not.
Oh you did!!
- - - - - No, no, no.
You did just then.
- - - - - Nonsense!
Oh, this is futile!
- - - - - No it isn't.
I came here for a good argument.
- - - - - No you didn't; no, you came here for an argument.
An argument isn't just contradiction.
- - - - - It can be.
No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.

It really depends on what kind of mood I'm in. If I'm not in the mood to suffer a troll gladly, I'll just skip on to another thread. No big whoop. I think this is one of those questions that has no "right" answer.

anyone with over 5k in posts is a troll, because that kind of post count shows they are 1. obsessed with living through the their DPF persona
and consequently 2. have no life beyond posting on the forum.

don't have time to read the article. can someone tell me if it describes some need to right some wrong when trolls act? is there either an outstanding injustice or the potential for one? is there something to defend?
