How do you feel about avatars?

Avatars would invade my privacy- the animated ones would wink at me when I'm in my underwear.

Avatars would give my enemy a face, and I usually find that intolerable.

I might still see the avatars when I close my eyes at night. No!

Bring back avatars!

Postby nickled&dimed » Wed May 12, 2004 8:51 pm

Hey, do you know the mythology for the term avatar? Me neither. Should JJoyce bring them back? Why can't we have them? All the other kids get to have them on their b boards.

ppplease?

Avatar comes from the Sanskrit word "Avatara", which means "the descent of God." It is an incarnation of the Godhead, which descends from the kingdom of heaven and materially manifests in earthly form. Whenever there is a decay of dharma, God will descend in this form to annihilate the wicked and re-establish righteousness.
If these are re-implemented, I'm calling dibs on Calvin pissing on "la migra"...

We're not bringing them back because they're ugly and people use them inappropriately.

Unless you are BDWG, in which case you can continue to blow it out your nose.

That's what would concern me. Since I mostly internet at work, I would be worried about something inappropriate popping up on my screen. My boss turns a blind eye on my forum addiction, but might not if things got too graphic.

At the time this statement was made, were images in the messages/taglines allowed?

not that I am complaining, but rather just curious....

fair 'nuff, but I am still wondering...

Why can't we have them? If people can control themselves enough to have images in the messages/taglines, why not next to our names?

Would that small of an image really increase load-up times for those still on dialup?

Prose, schmose. I love avatars. It's easy to limit size (75px sq? 6k? how big a dick could you possibly be and/or post with those restrictions?), and I expect you can nix animated images.

Size is simple to limit. That function is built into the forum software. There is not an option to nix animaged gifs thought. They could do it, but they would have to edit the PHP code. Which I think they don't know how to do and don't care to learn.

Limiting offensive material on a forum can be difficult. Everyone takes different approaches. I think images are a minor concern compared to offensive user posts. This forum has the most ill behaved users of any forum I visit. I assume the admin are comfortable with that though since they share similiar beliefs.

Oh well. Play their game until you are tired of it. Then just leave.

You've gotta be kidding me. I've only rarely seen a forum as civil as this one. With the exception of some spammed messages right before the election that were posted by party hacks who ran through the boards once and never came back - but hopefully we won't see them again for another 3 1/2 years.

Now, what happens involving Eggert and the Dane County Computer Witch Hunt Squad is another matter, but that's not ON the forum.

I love this example from Websters:

2. An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.

heh heh.

My .02 on avatars: One of the reasons I like this board is the lack of stupid pictures in every single post. Less scrolling, less visual garbage.

"Avatar" is, in fact, Sanskrit for "crutch of the retard."

True story.
