My fave issue in a looong time...

Postby jammybastard » Tue Aug 26, 2008 3:18 pm

Got to give credit when it's due....

The most recent issue of our local alt. weekly really tagged all the bases for me.
From the politics, to Stu's article, to the EXCELLENT
local music coverage, I was digging it all.
Can't say I've read an issue cover to cover in awhile, but this one I did.

Well done.

Don't speak so soon... your boy Mendelsohn has a piece in this week's issue.

*my boy*?
Why is he my boy?
Because I like this style of writing?
Y'know there were a couple of other who posted here that liked his writing as well and agreed with his snarky take. I wasn't the only one.

BTW - I guess that makes Eisen, Laskin, Albertoni and Burns "my boys" too so refer to them accordingly when you pass in the cubicle farm.

I think you've gone a little farther than simply complimenting his style of writing.

I discovered, via old-timers on The Well (they laugh at my 15-year tenure there) that Mendels(s)ohn used to write some very funny and astute stuff long ago, most notably the liner notes for The Kink Kronikles.

Ed Ward and Jon Carroll both weighed in, expressing surprise and some concern for J.M. after reading that "see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya" blog post.

Others were less surprised.

Here's Christgau on that Kinks record:

The Kink Kronikles [Reprise, 1972]
Self-konfessed kultist John Mendelsohn has kreated an inkomparable kompilation. Great hits are few--the Kinks have made U.S. top forty only twice since their first best-of, with "Lola" and "Sunny Afternoon." But great songs abound, assembled with a konnoisseur's kraft (all right, I'll stop) from available (and deleted) LPs, uncollected singles (told you I'd stop), and the vaults. Mendelsohn has little use for Ray Davies the would-be satirist ("Well-Respected Man," etc.), apologizing even for such marginally "boorish" efforts as "King Kong" and "Mr. Pleasant." So we get twenty-eight tracks that concentrate on Davies the lyric realist, the poet of pathos and aspiration, at his tuneful, readymade best. Definitely the world's most charming (and untidy) ripoff artist. And he wrote "Waterloo Sunset," the most beautiful song in the English language.

Wait a minute. You're defending an insufferable critic by referencing an even more established, even more insufferable critic?

Hah!

No defense here--read my post carefully--just context.

Also: I hang with Motor Primitives. 'Nuff said.

I work with a guy who was formerly the weatherman on WISC, and he was excited to see a story about the morning shows in Madison, and disappointed it was written by someone so clearly cranky and not used to watching morning news.

You know why they run the weather every 5 minutes John? People only tune in for 10 minutes max while they get ready for work, and weather and traffic are the only things they want to know. they'll get the hard news from the paper after they get to work.

Good Rid(d)ance.

Really?
Considering how verbose I usually am I thought my support of him was pretty tame.
Regardless I think you're projecting a bit, but feel free to pull a quote to prove you're point.

I like that an Isthmus editor appropriately dismissed him as a "crabby critic" right in the story deck.

And at least the illustration accompanying the story is funny.
