Hang Hung

Postby john_titor » Thu Feb 12, 2009 7:44 pm

I meant to ask this earlier, I apologize for my lack of timeliness.

Not to be insensitive to anyone's feelings, more on a grammar question.

I am not sure on the usage of hang in its various tenses, in terms of being strung up. I do seem to remember that it is odd. What are the proper tenses?

Lastly, are you guys getting loaded and then writing "The Week In Review"?

Not complaining, love it, just threw me for a loop.

I very much appreciate the free copy I get of the Isthmus every week. Long may you run.

I thought it was always "hanged" in this context.

But mostly, I appreciate the excuse to post this:

Yes, "hanged" is correct when referring to the method of execution or suicide.

Thus: He hanged himself. He was hanged. He shall be hanged at sunup. And so on ...

To suggest he was "hung" is to provide a level of detail more appropriately disclosed in the pages of Hustler than Isthmus.

When in doubt, read the friendly manual. Merriam-Webster:

Hanged is most appropriate for official executions <he was to be hanged, cut down whilst still alive…and his bowels torn out — Louis Allen> but hung is also used <gave orders that she should be hung — Peter Quennell>. Hung is more appropriate for less formal hangings <by morning I'll be hung in effigy — Ronald Reagan>.

Kinda makes you see the phrase "necktie party" in a new light, doesn't it?
