I don't sense reservation, humbleness, or stoicism when viewing AA ads... all I sense is a carnal sense of, lets fuck. No one is looking at the underwear. AA literally spells it out that the viewer isn't supposed to.

The ad is pretty sexy. Does it objectify women? Sure. Is the owner a scumbag? Compared to who? Will I spend $25 on a tee shirt? Nah.

I'll say this: The AA long sleever I'm wearing right now is the best-fitting long sleever I've ever owned.

I'm also sporting my AA track jacket with the Isthmus 30th Anniv. logo. It's a nice garment and American made.

I'm pretty sure that AA advertising is about as objectifying as any other company that markets sex.

I don't recall Isthmus running American Apparel ads that objectify dudes. Which is a shame.

There you go: "American Apparel is people!"
... in the sense that American Apparel = Soylent Green.

What are you wearing today?

The American Apparel ad for hosiery on the back of this week's Isthmus is pretty inappropriate. Even though it is just a drawing, the bare-breasted women in assless leggings should probably be inside the paper where it is less likely that kids will see it.

This is a good discussion to have. First of all, would you be as chagrined were Isthmus run a cigarette or beer ad on the back cover?

And what's the issue with kids seeing an illustration of a naked person? Assuming that most kids who are likely to actually spot and process such an image are old enough to watch TV, where they're bombarded with sexuality, much of it exploitive, what's the concern with this particular ad, which is relatively benign?

Been in line at the grocery store lately? What's on the back of your Isthmus this week is pretty consistent with the average cover of a Shape or Cosmo or US Weekly.

I wouldn't be thrilled with a cigarette or beer ad, either. I don't know what grocery store lines you are going through, but I've never seen full-on topless women on the covers of any of those magazines. There's nothing wrong with nudity, but it doesn't need to be gratuitously plastered all over the place as a way to sell leggings. I have no objection with you running the ad, but it seems like it would be better placed inside the paper.

And I don't buy the argument that "everyone else is doing it, so it's okay for the Isthmus to do it too."

It's my understanding that Isthmus is a newspaper aimed at the 18+ crowd. I've got no problem with the ad. Maybe it should have been on the "Gifts for Men" page though...

I second this sentiment.

There is nothing wrong with the human body. The ads are not pornographic.

All you prudes need to STFU and realize the days of your repressed sexuality are gone.

They are not fun to explain in either real or imaginary conversations I might have when I notice someone looking at the back cover of the paper I am holding. More work for me, when I am just trying to read the paper.

Tell that to Rebecca Kleefisch. I think she might disagree.
