Question for moderator re: spam

Postby Dairylander » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:38 am

Does it complicate the deletion of spam if people post responses to it?

Kinda. Some times the original post is deleted and the rest of the thread remains if only because there's entertaining stuff in there. I mean, the responding forons haven't broken any rules, right?

Sometimes we 86 the whole thread.

In the instance of the ugg thread, I just deleted the URLs out of the original because it was so funny and by the time I got to it, there were like 10 responses.

Suggestion:
How about you give an additional staff member the ability to delete spam?
Or maybe even one of the most trusted, prolific, veteran users could be entrusted to do some deletion?
It seems there are some times that the forum isn't monitored, and it gets pretty cluttered.

Would it help if, in order to create a user account, there was one of those confuse-a-bot gizmos where you have to read the code from a distorted picture?

In other words, are these spammy accounts being created by automated software?

Hmmm, FAVORS took 10 minutes to write his five posts, and created his profile on the day before. Doesn't seem bottish. But then a clever bot-master would program his bots to seem just like real people and take time writing posts. But wait, that's just what they're expecting us to think! No, THAT's just they're expecting us to think. Unless..

Do we know if this is the same spammer or different ones? Seems to be becoming an almost daily occurrence. Getting annoying.

There's no reason for anyone to be a douche about this. There's a whole page full of contact email addresses if anyone has a question for Isthmus staff.

Near as we can tell, they're not bots. They're people, likely employed in some kind of tech sweat shop to enter spam in all sorts of places. Because we don't attempt to weed these people out at the registration phase, we don't know what's up until they start to post.

The good news is that they usually post in the early morning, so when I first log in I can usually take care of a lot of the spam. We also see relatively little of it.

The bad news is that it takes a decent chunk of time and I'd prefer to be doing just about anything else.

PB, if you can't see the difference between your passive-aggressive, whiny complaints about Madison Miscellany and the tone of the original question of this thread, then...well, tough. You're a lost cause at that point.

Ya big fuckin' crybaby.

Ahh, a sarcastic, unserious response. I'd expect nothing less, BookPoPo.

Au contraire. It was a completely serious and unsarcastic response.
