"Scenes" photo section

Postby Beaver » Thu May 20, 2010 10:29 am

In the weekly photo section "Scenes" it says submit high-resolution photos only. What resolution is needed? How many megapixels?

Direct from the Art Dept:

The larger the image size the better. A resolution of 200 is
preferred, but a resolution of 72 will work if the photo is ten
inches wide.

Honestly, is this what the Isthmus Art Department came up with?

200 what? 72 what? Pixels? Probably not -- that'd be way too small. So, dpi ("dots per inch") ? Possibly that was intended, but it's meaningless to talk about the "resolution" of a digital image using dpi unless you also specify size in inches that the image will be printed at. "dpi" is a printing term; it has no direct connection to the sizing of digital images.

If you want to print a image to a size of 3 inches in width and you want it at a resolution of 200 dpi, you need an image at least 600 pixels in width. A ten-inch wide image at 72 dpi needs an image 720 pixels in width. Etc. Why not just state the minimum required dimensions in pixels?

BOB SLYDELL: So what you do at Initech is you take the specifications from the customers, and you bring them down to the software engineers?

TOM: Yes, yes, that's-- that's right.

BOB PORTER: Well, then I just have to ask, why couldn't the customers just take them directly to the software people, huh?

TOM: Well, uh, I'll tell you why. Uh, because...engineers are not good at dealing with customers.

BOB SLYDELL: ...So, you physically take the specs from the customers?

TOM: Well...no, my-- my secretary does that, or the fax.

BOB SLYDELL: Ah.

BOB PORTER: So, then, you must physically bring them to the software people.

TOM: Well...no. Yeah, I mean, sometimes.

BOB SLYDELL: What-- what would you sa you do here?

TOM: Well, look, I already told you. I deal with the goddamn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people! Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?

Let me google that for you.

I checked the first two links on your condescending google post but still don't know how many megapixels are resolutions of 200 and 72. Is it that difficult to answer that I have to search the web for hours, or can you provide a simple answer?

Yes. It really is that difficult...obviously, or you wouldn't still be asking. It confuses people all the time.

You need the inches plus the dpi to figure it out. Asking how many megapixles a 72dpi or 200dpi image works out to is an impossible question to answer.

So, as stated above a 72 dpi image at 10 inches would be fine. Let's say 10 X 10 to keep it simple works out to 518,400 pixels...or 1/2 a megapixel.

Dots and pixels while very similar aren't the same thing.

I have to ask people for images all the time in my job. I just tell 'em they need to be, let's say 2000 pixels on the shortest side. And not a jpeg if they can help it. I'll worry about the dpi or pixels.

A megapixel is a million pixels. I thought everyone who owned a digital camera knew that.

What's stupid about it? It's a good measure of image resolution.
