Nope but I give it 10 minutes before Lawrence Meade shits all over his articles.

Adam, who has been involved with the WELL for a long, long time, crams a lot of insight into that short piece. But this thread, particularly the need for some to drag their grudges into it, is as good an illustration as any.

It's nice to know some people remember what the forum was like eight years ago, or even two years ago. We were good.

Personnel turnover is a constant, but what changed?

It's a different kind of trolling.

Earlier, people would come on here with some right-wing idea or rant, the regulars would tear it apart (creatively or not), and the ranter, realizing the legs upon which his argument stood had been sawn off, would back away and leave. Some were smart and won points, some lost. Fair enough.

An example of the old school is Earthling, who makes arguments in apparent sincerity, arguments that regularly get demolished or degenerate into talking-point repetition. He always comes back for more, which is just fine, but he seems to know when the forum isn't buying what he has to say. This is reasonable.

The new generation of trolls doesn't state ideas at all. They either launch monologues nobody can decipher, ask pointless questions to derail touchy topics (we should deal better with that, by the way), or just plain shit all over perfectly good discussions.

Because we've got no active moderation, the signal to noise ratio redlines. With the needle buried, quality drops too low for most people to bother with and you get the madison.com syndrome.

The new-gen trolls know this and use quantity, not quality, to drown out discussion.

And that's the difference. Better quality replies to a deluge of garbage is not a solution.

I don't entirely get the fried egg / concentric circle analogy, but I'd consider TDPF an egg with no yolk right now. I think that's intentional, but I'm having a tough time figuring out why.

If it's a matter of page views staying constant with reduced moderator investment, I get that. But it almost seems as if we're being mocked for being here, and I suppose I get that, too. We're just anonymous dopes pecking away at computer keyboards thinking we belong to something and are contributing to something. Forons, truly.

Yep, that's pretty much it. jjoyce has made it clear that he doesn't really care what goes on here as long as something goes on here.

In a way, this is a business opportunity for some other online publication (or would-be publication, local type) to poach the whole thing and tempt us all to switch.

Meade, what is your end game with shit like this? Is it just to make other people feel bad?

I'm no ray of sunshine, but I do not understand the appeal of pissing in somebody's Cheerios. What do you get out of it?
