THANK YOU, The Book Police and green union terrace chair! I was starting to wonder if my posts were completely opaque. Now that I know I was clear, I can let poor Sno go.

And just to show there are no hard feelings, I'll weigh in on the privacy thing.

The fun we have on this little forum, the interactions some of us enjoy on facebook or Twitter, the convenience of shopping on Amazon or browsing news from The Guardian... it all comes at a cost (can I get a "duh"?), and privacy makes up a hefty share of the bill.

I keep half an eye on my facebook privacy settings, but I post as though my timeline could go public at any time. And I post here on TDPF knowing my foron handle won't shield my identity from anyone with the slightest inclination to root it out.

I think pre-electronic-age notions of privacy are a form of denial for anyone on the grid—but even if not, I'm happy to surrender some of mine to splash about in these waters.

Maybe that attitude will bite me in the ass if the societal shit hits the fan. Or maybe I'll have resources I wouldn't have had without connections I've renewed or strengthened online. Here's hoping we never find out.

Jason Joyce must care more about his lawn than you people.

I enjoyed Jason. I created this thread because I hoped he would post a farewell post about his transition from Isthmus to Cap Times.

I think he totally hated dealing with the forum and is not about to look back.

Seems like he has his priorities in order. Online "relationships" come and go, lawns are forever.

How did he deal with the forum? He didn't really do anything but lecture people and let trolls run free.

If trolls run free, why not we
True love needs no company
It can cure the soul, it can make it whole
If trolls run free

That's my favorite Dylan song. Hardly anybody knows it.

Is anybody running the Forum now or are we part of an experiment in anarchism?

I think we have a "Lord of the Flies" scenario going on now.

Either way I'm curious to see what changes this means for the forum.
Jason made sure TDPF design was firmly stuck at the turn of the century and completely avoided adding any social networking features.

That's a good thing.

Aye, I agree. If you want to mediate your connection to the world via a corporation, there are many options. TDP has sustained itself via it's slow networking approach. It's better for you and it tastes better!

Maybe the next person will be a little more adventurous and forward thinking.

The forum certainly needs a bit more. Although phpBB isn't too bad for a free software, I think that they could cough up a few bucks for some decent commercial software.

My recommendation ( if Admin reads the forums now and then ) would be IP.Board by Invision Power Services. I use it myself on three forums, and also code modifications and add-ons for it.

http://www.invisionpower.com/apps/board/

Just to name a few good features.
  • Social media integration (login with Facebook etc).
  • Sub-forums as well as forum categories.
  • Full featured rich-text editor for posting.
  • Post (embed) video/audio instead of just linking.
  • Advanced attachment uploads.
  • Permissions and moderation settable per forum.
  • Extensive moderation tools far beyond phpBB's.
  • Excellent spam monitoring service
  • Custom profile fields for your needs.

That is some nice looking software. I don't really have an issue with the simplicity of this forum, but an upgrade wouldn't hurt. I do like the idea of being able to embed videos and upload photos. Also, showing unread threads and tagging are nice features as well.

I looked into this, the current software can easily be configured to allow uploading images and embedding video. Both would be nice improvements.

You can imagine that relaunching this site with brand new software would be a considerable time investment. But maybe asking Isthmus to tune the existing software is not a bridge too far.
