Wish You Were (Still) Here

Grocery stores, recipes, cook books, CSAs, farmers' markets, organic, local, processed, corporate. It's a smorgabord!

Oh, such wasted potential. Since they've closed, I've taken it upon myself to learn the art of smoking ribs (among other meats, but ribs are my passion), and I don't think any place in town can match what I make in my back yard. Thanks PPP for finding me a great hobby!

After that we'd go across the street to Backstage at East Towne and swill Oscars, then go see a movie. I'm thinking I'd probably turn up my nose now, but it was fun then....

There are still Barbaby's in the Chicago suburbs. I hadn't been to one since I was in elementary school. I went last year; it was exactly how I remembered it. The pizza is unremarkable, but it was a blast to relive my childhood.

Did we mention:

Kosta's?
The Second Story?
Cleveland's Lunch?
Ella's Deli on State Street?
The Rathskellar grill?

Oh, MAN do I miss that.

And the outdoor grill on the Terrace quit selling hamburgers, apparently in an attempt to force people to get their burgers from the new grill or whatever it is.

I'm not sure how that's working out but it's getting pretty hard to find a simple plain burger around campus for under five bucks. Mickey's Dairy Bar, Five Guys, and... um.

Sometimes I miss the 602 Club.

Not very often, but once in a while.

I miss the 602 when I drive by and see that beer barn. There needed to be one historic dive where philosophy grad students, poet cab drivers, jazz aficionados, card players, and bohemian women could gather for a schooner and steam up the windows.

Their incredibly bland, in fact nearly flavor-free, noodle soup was my hangover recovery go-to option in the '70s after long nights of smashing the state.

Double S BBQ is a bit of a hike, but they're fantastic.

Disclaimer: I haven't actually had the ribs yet. We're huge fans of the sausage, brisket, bacon-wrapped smoked jalapeno, buttermilk pie & the fact that they sell Shiner.

A coworker who recently moved up from Atlanta went to Taste of Madison hoping to find the southern BBQ she'd been missing. She raved about the Double S brisket and bacon-wrapped smoked jalapeños.

[threadjack, but since you brought it up]

If you're, y'know, interested: http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/art ... icle=37712

Pete's gets a mention in there, and hey I brought it back on-topic.

That's fantastic. I'm just happy to hear that they seem to be doing pretty well, despite the somewhat remote location. I really enjoy that place.
