That far down King St seemed like the dark side of the moon back when I was living, like, 7 blocks away on the other side of the Square.

But we'd happily make the trek for Porto Bananas and that awesome diorama.

El Charro.

Every city needs one El Charro and one Little Village Cafe.

Does the 602 Club count? Guess not . . . . which would rule out Mother's...

For the old timers: Nob Hill, Simon House and Latin Club.

A couple more.

Amato's for their Friday fish fry.

The original Crandall's, just off the square, especially for their White House sandwich (with asparagus spears on top, which Paisan's lacks) and their smelt fry (during the much too short season in early spring).

The Latin Club on Johnson? That's for mid-timers. The Nar Bar is for old timers. And even I don't remember what it was before that... the Green Dragon or something?

I went to Crandall's a few times... very cozy. But it's cozier now, as Tornado.

Add me to the list of folks who miss Big Mama and Uncle Fats...
and the East side, seafood equivalent, Holy Mackerel, whose food is still available via HMI Catering.

For those who believe there's more to Greek food than gyros....Kosta's.

When I worked on the 900 block of Willy St in the early '90s, Bob's Taste of Country was THE lunch spot (space now occupied by Bon Apetit Cafe).

Also miss the original Shanghai Minnie's on University. Pretty decent fare for the budget concious, if not the most exotic ingredients.

Loved the Mango Grill for the Mashers as much as the great support for local musicians.

Lastly - Sita's Kitchen

I'm surprised no one mentioned Wild Iris. Definitely one of my favorites.

I really, really, really miss El Charro. I'm not a huge Chicken Chimi fan, but theirs was the best around.

The best location was at Gateway Mall.

I second these two. I especially miss the Little Village black bean burritto.
