Tacos...ENOUGH Tacos...

So. More tacos. A new taco place just went in where Brueggers Bagels used to be on University Ave.

From University Bay Dr to Segoe on there are 1, 2, 3...six, freakin' SIX, taco/burrito/mexican joints. They range from terrible to mediocre.

Can someone please open something else on that strip (a greasy spoon diner would be nice) or open up a taco joint that isnt mediocre? Enough.

A decent Korean place would be greatly appreciated. One that understands the difference between fresh chillies and dried chili powder, for starters.

I don't like an excess of Mexican or any type food either but Tex Tubb's, Laredo's, Pasqual's at Hilldale all seem pretty good to me...what are the others?

I've been curious about those Korean taco trucks. Maybe we could get one of those.

I think the Mexican boom has hit its zenith (or nadir, if you're Crockett). As many (including Eating in Madison A to Z's Nichole Fromm, who introduced me to the concept) have noted, "authentic" tacos have reached Stage 5 of the Center for Culinary Development's Trend Mapping chart:

Stage 1: The ingredient, dish and/or cooking technique appears at upscale dining establishments, ethnic and popular independent restaurants blessed with creative chefs and diners with adventurous palates.

Stage 2: The item is featured in specialty consumer-oriented food channels such as Gourmet, and Bon Appétit magazines, The Food Network plus retail stores such as Sur la Table that target culinary professionals and serious home chefs.

Stage 3: The item begins to appear in mainstream chain restaurants – Applebee’s or Chili’s – as well as retail stores such as Williams-Sonoma that target recreational cooks.

Stage 4: The women’s magazines and family-oriented publications – Family Circle, Better Homes and Gardens – pick up the buzz.

Stage 5: Finally, the trend makes its way to quick service restaurant menus and are either starting to appear or are having an increased presence on grocery store shelves.

See as proof: Taco Bell's cantina tacos.

I think what we're looking at now--at least in Madison--is a rise in noodle shops and other quick Southeast Asian eateries (Thai Noodles, Umami Ramen, Pho Nam). This development meets with my approval, by the way.

Good - Tex Tubb's, Laredo's, Pasqual's at Hilldale
Bad - Qdoba, Pancheros
Not sure - the new one

What is wrong with Tex Tubb's, Laredo's, Pasqual's? Is there any Mexican place in town you like?

Tex Tubb's and Pasqual's are more Tex-Mex than Mexican. I prefer La Mestiza, El Pastor, Guadalajara and Casa del Sol to the three you mentioned.

And no, I'm not impressed by Frabonis. Its ok, but its nothing to brag about.

Hell, I'll take ANY kind of deli in Madison.
