Early morel season?

Postby Broadsheet » Thu Mar 22, 2012 3:46 pm

Just wondering if the early spring moves up the morel mushroom hunting season -- or eliminates it. Or whether we just have to wait and see.

I think it moves up. And a hard frost will eliminate it.

If I see leaf bud-break on oak trees, or lilac flower bud-break, I'll head down to my favorite hunting grounds and see what may be up.

We need more rain for the morels to appear.

We just got the rain. I was riding my bike in it, and by time I got home I had to dump water out of my shoes and all the dollars in my wallet were soaking wet. Nice warm rain though, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the lilacs bloom in a couple days. Get ready,

This is one reason I would like to see it get cold again. Hopefully it will kill off the eggs.

If it's anything like 2 years ago I won't even plant a garden. Those fuckers were biting me through the garden gloves.

Wisconsin mosquitoes have got to be among the most vicious in the world. I lived in the tropics for two years, and a light coating of REI Jungle Juice kept the mosquitoes at a respectful distance. Came back here, tried the juice--Wisconsin mosquitoes treated it as a light garnish, a kind of chemical parsley gently laid atop the main course.
