Food products I don't use.

Grocery stores, recipes, cook books, CSAs, farmers' markets, organic, local, processed, corporate. It's a smorgabord!

Food products I don't use.

Food products you don't use, or just don't get. (Excluding the obvious examples such as vegans not going for pork rinds.)

Cooking spray: I don't get it; I don't trust it.

I like that Alton Brown show where he sprays the pan and then says "But be careful how you spray this stu-" and then slips and slams to the floor. That's good comedy.

I like the Alton Brown show where he makes the world's worst pun related to food, and is subsequently beaten severely by several burly stagehands.

I was the same way for years but relented and tried it on some of my well seasoned pizza pans and got converted. Even the store brand works good if you are using a non-stick pan for an omelet and don't want to clog your arteries with butter (not that that's stopped me, of course). And it really does work on the charcoal grill. I spray it right on the hot grill and ignore the flare-up.

edited for early morning spelling errors!

Do people still eat margarine?

Don't even ask. Look what happened when I said I thought nobody made cake any more.

I don't get buying packaged crumbs. Every time I see those, I imagine some food company executives rolling on the floor laughing.

There you go. At least you know what you're getting.

I tried one of the reusable, metal spray bottles made to be filled with straight oil, but I didn't like the results (narrow, uneven coverage).

This looks like a much better idea.

I'm not a baker but I have heard several people say they're returning to Crisco because nothing can beat it for a flaky crust, warnings be damned.

I don't get Nutella. I can eat it, but I don't get the devotion.

There are better versions of chocolate-hazelnut spreads. Nutella is mostly Crisco plus sugar. My favorite is a Belgian version called (really!) "Crumpy," but that's a bit hard to find around here. However, there are other brands at places like the WIlly St. Coop and Whole Foods that taste more like chocolate and hazelnuts.

It's not hard to make yourself if you have a food processor--just another nut butter, really.

I just recently learned that not all Nutella is created equal. Most of what's available in the US is made in Canada. The actual Italian Nutella, imported in some specialty shops, is allegedly worth every penny and every ounce of devotion.

Damn Canadians, adulterating our precious bodi--uh, choco-hazelnut spread!
