I lost my rocket

Postby Henry Vilas » Wed Nov 13, 2013 6:32 pm

I planted arugula in a half whiskey barrel this spring. It finally frozen out. For the last couple months I picked off the flowers and it kept producing new leaves. Had some in our salads only two days ago. I never realized arugula was that weather hearty.

Does being in the half-barrel protect against the onslaught of rabbits?

Aha--great question! No, that's where the rockets come in.

Yes. Those buggers are everywhere, although free roaming cats have somewhat dented the population. That and small dogs, especially when they discover the rabbit nests.

Yeah, but squirrels are still a problem! They dig into my potted garden and leave the in ground flowers alone!

Squirrels are a problem this time of year. Chipmunks dig like mad all season long.

Squirrels dig into my big pots all year long. It's most annoying when something is half grown or all grown and they upset the roots!

I know, arugula (say it like a big Klaxon horn...Aroooooguulah!)
was as tough as my Kale, which slightly out-toughed the broccoli.
Most impressive, young Padawan.
Don't get me started about the varmints, ever since Max my outstanding outdoor cat passed, the critters just laugh at me. I actually hit a bunny (awwww!) with a rock once but not enough power to bother it. Stupid bunnies.

I once squirted a rabbit in the eyes with animal repellant, felt bad and he was back in the morning. Changed to container gardening which worked great except for the squirrels. I'm still looking for something reliable, short of screen.

You can't win against squirrels. That is why there are so many of them.

We have always been at war against Squirrelasia.

Yeah, so why do they find my potted nasturtiums (and geranium to a lesser degree) so attractive, compared to anything else? Even the rabbits left my roses alone after last year's drought. Are pots catnip to squirrels? What about coyote urine?

Squirrels don't like certain bulbs -- I think daffodil and iris are either really bad-tasting or toxic to them. So if you keep losing spring-flowering bulbs to the squirrels, plant ones they hate.

They are also not crazy about my prairie garden. I think they feel too exposed being so far from a tree. They like my front yard, where they can run straight up a tree if they feel threatened. If you totally hate squirrels, remove their tree-refuges.

Bunnies, on the other hand, love the prairie garden particularly anything with "clover" in its name which seems to mean "salad" in rabbit-speak. I swear this one mother bunny had a new litter of babies about every six weeks last summer. The only solution is hawks.

And hawks need a tree to perch in.

And with the tree come squirrels, perhaps even squirrels with tiny light sabers.

And so it goes. Mother nature wins again.

Because I know others are burning to know ...

The OED lists the first (English) usage of "arugula" as 1960, whereas the equivalent, "rocket," dates back to the early 16th century.
