Austin

We want to hear about your adventures, be they from Istanbul, Ixtapa or Ixonia. And hey, you might even find someone you can sell your extra Euros to.

Austin

Postby rrnate » Thu Sep 11, 2008 9:10 am

Hey folks,

The wife and I are taking a trip to Austin soon, and while we've lined up some awesome stuff to do, I have suspicions that there are other equally awesome things to do there that we don't know about.

So, does anyone have any tips on good things to do in Austin (TX)?

* See the bats
* Go to Emo's
* Plan for multiple visits to 6th street to explore the clubs and bands
* Get a hotel downtown, or S. Congress (easy to bus or walk from downtown)
* Don't worry about planning the music. The best thing about Austin is that, unlike anywhere else including Portland, pretty much every band is good. Just wander into clubs to see who is playing. There is a good chance that the best band in the world playing live on any given night is playing a tiny club in Austin. You will see great music, just keep an open mind. If you want to see indie rock you can, but there are very strong C&W, swing, honkytonk and blues traditions there, and that's going to be a lot more interesting to you from a musical standpoint, I'd wager.
* Eat machaca
* Eat lots of tacos
* Try the mole
* Drink margaritas: rocks, no salt
* Get out into the hill country if you can
* Go to Barton Springs

When are you going?
I'll be there at the end of the month to work ACL Fest.

As for places to go...
S. Congress is a great walk.
Make sure you stop at Gueros (http://www.guerostacobar.com/) for eating and drinking.
If you want a cool place to stay, I'd recommend the Hotel San Jose (http://www.sanjosehotel.com/).

Sadly, we're going the week after the ACL fest. Every time I look at the line up, it burns a little bit more, so I try not to think of it.

I second the bats. I felt vaguely embarrassed at going to see them, since it seemed so touristy, but I really did enjoy it. That, and the price is right.

Depending on when you're going, they may have already headed south for the season.

Thanks for the tips folks. I have done some research in to Texas beers as well and I am now officially stoked.

BTW - you cannot, cannot go to Austin and not have ribs.

Ironworks is downtown and very good.
my fave overall bbq joints are Ruby's...grain fed beef and great sauce, yummy.

This is what is known as the Vegetarian's Dilemma. I will not be ribbing it up, though I will each as much Texas-style vegetarian food as I can. (There has been much research on this front as well.)
