Seattle is one of my favorite places in the country. Since it looks like you're not going to be there during a weekday, you'll miss out on Salumi
. Too bad.
Depending on where you'll be, there are a couple places I've been that are fun. Downtown, there's the Space Needle. Unless you've got a Bucket List, I'm not sure the $14+ to get to the top is worth it. But the Experience Music Project
is right there, too, and pretty cool. Of course, the locals deride it.
Get to a Tom Douglas restaurant
if you can; there are a lot, and they're good. Bon Appetit just named him Restaurateur of the Year for 2008. Other good eateries include Volterra
for a finer dining experience, Steelhead Diner
for the Pike Place Market vibe, and Copper Gate
(website front-page NSFW) for a Nattspil kind of late-night place. If you've ever wondered whether peanut butter and bacon can work on a hamburger, try King's Hardware in Ballard.
Good shopping (local joints as opposed to Nordstrom) can be had in Fremont and Ballard, but you'll need to make sure you've got room in your suitcase. There's good stuff there. Deluxe Junk is a must-see if you like the Simpsons episode "Homer's Phobia."
