Atlantic City Recommendations?

Postby Endo Rockstar » Mon Apr 20, 2009 10:41 am

Hey Folks, I did this once with a Nashville thread and the forons came through with great suggestions, so here I go again. I'm heading to Atlantic City on a spur of the moment trip. I'll be going it mostly alone (I'm heading out with a old bartender friend, but she's going to "work" the casino so we only cross paths once in a while when we go on trips like this)

I'm staying at Harrah's, just across the bridge from the Boardwalk, but there's a shuttle to and from there up until bartime, so I know I can spend a far amount of drunken time doing the tourist thing.

What I need, however, is a couple places to eat, drink, and take in shows away from the Casino and the Boardwalk, that are worth hitting on a reasonable cab fare. Any suggestions would be well appreciated, so thanks in advance!

AC is a dump and it can be dangerous. Do not wander too far off the boardwalk. If you want to stray, take a cab to the Borgata across town. They have several nice restaurants including Bobby Flay's steak house which is OK but expensive. Otherwise, there's absolutely no reason to leave the boardwalk area.

South of AC there are several beach towns that run together: Ventnor, Margate and Longport. Further south and across the bridge are Ocean City (dry town), Strathmere and Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor and Wildwood. These would all be hopping three months from now, but are dead in April.

Hmmm, well thanks for the recommendations. I can't say I'm too worried about ending up in rougher areas if it means for a good show, a cold brew, a quality bar-burger, or getting beat up by a stripper, as far as I'm concerned all four should be national pastimes.

I'll do the boardwalk, and I'm sure we'll pull out the black and whites at least one night for a decent dinner, so the Borgata is possibility.

But I kinda need to know where the locals kick back. Think the Double-Down Saloon in Vegas or New York. A quality mix of, Businessmen, hippies, stoners, punkers, Strippers, Bartenders/service industry folks, pirates, ne'er do-wells, and every-day alcoholics is kinda what I'm looking for. That's the kind of places I usually end up anyway, but it'd be nice since its only a short 4 night trip to have a general direction to head once I get there...

Keep em comin' if you got em!

Dude, there's no faux-hipster/hippy-by-choice/starving artist vibe there to "find". Grinding generational poverty, drug addicts, con-men and hookers are what you'll find. There's nothing "cool" about it. All of the dealers live inland or in Brigantine. They park in huge lots out by the Parkway and take busses to their casino jobs.

Here are some crime statistics. I just googled this site. Feel free to do your own research:

where would you suggest then Ned? a tour of your cul-de-sac?

"and here's our 3/4 bath we just had redone, the misses put a lot of work into the tile scheme....."

"I have to apologize for our neighbor’s yard, the neighborhood association has told them 3 times to get rid of that mailbox because it doesn't match the beige/tope/earthen color scheme of the community but they never do anything about it..."

and Ned you're assuming I won't need to score when I'm out there, so go clean your Sperrys...there's lawn clippings on them....

/thread self destruct in 3...2...1...

I'm sure my zip code is more "diverse" than any you've lived in so don't go there.

I just wanted to give you my 2 cents. Perhaps others can provide info that's more to your liking. Hope you have a good time.

I seriously doubt it.

Ever had a neighbor try and light the hallway on fire? Not a good kind of diversity, but it's diversity.

There's Minnesota "diverse" and then there's being around real diversity. There's no way you live anywhere as funky as places I know Endo's lived.

Endo. Check the pawn shops at least. I assume they've got some. All the stuff Ned is afraid of often leads to fun if you know how to not make yourself a target, which I know you do.

I like looking for the streets featured on "Cops". Good times.

Couple places you should check out while in AC.

Dock's Oyster House (2404 Atlantic Avenue; 609/345-0092)

White House Sub Shop (2301 Arctic Avenue; 609/345-1564

Angelo’s Fairmont Tavern
2300 Fairmount Avenue
Atlantic City 08401
609-344-2439

And: Tony's Baltimore Grill.

Angelo's and Tony's would give you a taste of old Atlantic City, what very little is left of it.

That's really about it. As much as I would like to disagree with Ned, as a NJ Native, AC is really a shithole aside from the Disneyfied boardwalk area. Sometimes, it reminds me of freshly painted turd. It may be prettier, but underneath it all, it's still shit.

*Do not stray too far from the boardwalk on foot.
