best tv show EVER

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

Dark comedy is a touchy thing and I think this show misses way more often than it hits. It's just not that funny. Too bad, cuz the cast is OK. I think they stress the 'uncomfortable' too much and sometimes the potential humor of those situations either seems forced or gets lost completely. Like I said, it's a tough genre of comedy to do right.

It took me some time to get around to watching it, but, you are correct: The Wire is the best TV drama of all time.

The Office (UK Version) is the best comedy of all time.

But, that's just like, my opinion.

I also think that "The Wire" is the best show that's ever been on TV. It's the reason I have HBO, and it's worth every penny for that show alone.

On network TV, I'd vote for "Freaks and Geeks" as the best show ever.

What about the best show to watch when you're high? In my college years, it was the "Donny and Marie Show." Hilarious!

The best show to watch while high has to be mystery science theater 3000...or maybe match game.

I dunno ... both good calls, but my votes go to The Prisoner or Mr. Show.

What? No Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, or Mike Douglas show?

My vote goes to That '70s Show. One of the few programs featuring the stars puffing dope at least once per episode.

Johnny Carson

I was raised on this, going back to when the show was 90 minutes and was broadcast out of New York. You know, when Johnny died a few years back, there was no shortage of praise for the Tonight Show and certainy no shortage of the clips we've all seen dozens of times, but I think one thing that people neglected to mention was the actual level of conversation that once prevailed, in contrast to the plug-o-ramas that exist now. Sure, people plugged their shows and music on the Tonight Show, but I also remember they would actually book authors as their final guests (when they didn't get bumped). I guess in the 90 minute days they had more time to actually discuss issues without having to shorten evrything to a punchline. After Johnny was over came Tom Snyder on the Tomorrow Show, which also raised the level of TV talk above the norm.

Yep.
Only the Daily Show seems to have in depth intelligent conversations.
Oh: I didn't mention Dick or Merv on purpose.
They weren't as, mmm, impish, as Johnny.
But Mike?
Sigh.
I miss being sick and staying home from school eating crackers and drinking 7up.

Best show ever? Probably the Sopranos or Seinfeld. With the Bob Newhart show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show close behind
