Commercials

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

Any radio ad with a siren in the background. I hate that. Very distracting while driving. Mandatory check to rear view mirror. If you're not getting busted(whew), takes some time to determine where that noise is coming from. FCC ought to ban them. Sireens are'nt speech, so I've got no issues with that. It's a safety\distraction issue, especially in heavy traffic. More people are distracted and there is more shit on the road to deal with. Did I mention I hate them? A lot?

Can't believe I missed this one but was reminded yesterday - the American Family Insurance commercial. Specifically, the Asian woman at the end who is so happy with herself that she can sing "American Family Insurance".

I doubt we'll see that commercial again after their mass layoffs.

American dream indeed.

I would not admit to being a Steinhafel, let alone pretend to be one.

Does that Olde Golde guy really think that flipping a coin into his jacket's handkerchief pocket is going to attract customers? Everything about that commercial screams "don't trust this sleazeball!"

The Samsung Galaxy commercial mocking the people waiting in line for an Apple product.

Would love to see an alternative ending where an elderly driver plows through the lot of them.

Often I sit around and wonder, "Where do you think Pam Tauscher gets her glasses?" Invariably, I am given the answer during the next television commercial break.

American Express "Small Business Saturday" ad uses a snippet from Simon and Garfunkel's America that includes the line "I've got some real estate here in my bag" which is a veiled reference to grass (i.e., marijuana). I don't think using a credit card to buy pot from a small business is a good idea.

Hmmm, my room mate way back then, and I never heard it that way. It was one of her favorite albums. And this way way back at a smoky coop.

At least some of the Christmas commercials are entertaining like the Joe Boxer or Chanel ones.

This exists a year later. I always thought she looked baked in that ad and her dress weird. Also buxom.

Every character has a name and three-page dossier in my mind for the Charter 999 people. Even Jeff, the recently sober accounting temp from Nebraska and Tina, a take no gruff single mom from Moline that dance in the hallway after that fight over the waitress at Toosconey's.
I usually focus on the bald guy's weird faces, the red-headed woman, or imagine the black guy shown is the one singing the song. I appreciate the way they snap their finishes. I hate this ad.

Darleen Ballweg is a civic icon. Please stop parading her out in front of the camera.

Last, and my true drug regardless of medium, The Mad Men of Mad City Sales. I will stop what I am doing to watch these two. I eagerly anticipate the return of St. Patrick's Day.

p.s. I also like the music in Huzar's House of Diamonds
