I Rock

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

I Rock

Postby Marvell » Mon Aug 25, 2008 3:15 pm

Thanks to The Gomers, I was able to purge myself of my month-long Steely Dan obsession.

Enjoy!

It's like Rex Harrison channeling Vince Neil.

I think that's the most beautiful thing anyone's ever said to me.

Steely Dan blows walrusses.
Thanks. I now have "Ricky" running circles in mah brain. Hopefully it's nothing a 9-iron to the forehead won't cure.

Dig that shit!
Nice one.

Love Gomeroke, but I'm too intimidated by The Gomers to get up there and throw down. Full props to people like you who do.

I hear this a lot, but on some level I don't get it; yes, The Gomers are awesome musicians - but they are also some of the nicest, most supportive people imaginable.

I mean, I'm hardly a pro - the only band I was ever in was my punk band Gaunt Lent back when I was fifteen and living in rural Vermont - but at this point I've probably done somewhere between 75 and 100 different songs with The Gomers. Some of these performances doubtlessly sucked - but what the hell? Might as well (as the kids say) 'go for the gusto.'

Of course, my perception of all of this might be colored by the fact that Steve Burke was one of the first ten people I met in Madison when I moved here back in 1988.

Feel the Gomeroke love, jammyb. It feels you.

HA! You sure you're not channeling Dave Adler there because he always says the same thing to me when I see him!

I don't know what it is that intimidates me. I don't any inhibitions playing with my band, but something about getting up and potentially butchering a classic weighs heavy on my mind.
It's probably because I don't drink that much anymore.

You summed up my own Gomeroke fears succinctly.

glad I'm not alone.
Biff and Adler tease me about taking it waaay too seriously.
maybe if you give me some of what Swampy D is on I'll be fine.

It can be pretty scary. The keys are to 1)pick something you know really, really well and 2)make sure that it's in your range. Don't try to take on Zeppelin unless you are godlike, but A-Ha's "Take on Me" is probably going to be OK.

I tackled "Thriller" my first time out and Steve Burke was all "Thriller? Whoa" and they totally rocked it and I was HORRIBLE. Tried to do the whole thing in falsetto and it was atrocious, although I recovered and actually kind of killed on the Vincent Price outro.

I also try to pick songs that are stupid, or funny, or just plain non-classic.

My "Eyes Without a Face" is, for example, peerless. I even get the shadowboxing and whatnot in there.

Or, you could do what I do - sing whatever the hell you want, and let the chips fall where they may. Most of my favorite Gomeroke moments involve doing songs that, on some rational level, I had no business even attempting.

Does this mean that sometimes I make a total fool of myself? Without a doubt. Example: I've done Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" on three different occasions. At least one of those times I totally sucked; on a different day, I knocked it out of the park.

Bottom line: the audience doesn't care. The Gomers don't care. I'm sure the song itself doesn't care.

Don't be afraid to make an ass of yourself - there are worse things to be.

Lame, for instance.

I Rock AGAIN

Postby Marvell » Wed Dec 10, 2008 1:53 pm

More Gomeroke rockin', video courtesy of my pal Howie.

Note the sweater vest and jeans - I look positively Garfunklian!

PS - Dave Adler is a funny, funny man.
