Boardwalk Empire - Scorsese's New HBO Series, Looks Awesome!

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

Boardwalk Empire - Scorsese's New HBO Series, Looks Awesome!

Postby Remember_Me » Mon Jul 19, 2010 1:52 am

Just saw a promo for this new series on HBO tonight. It premieres September 19. Think we got another Sopranos-size hit here. The cast is fantastic. They got Terence Winter, who was a big force behind making the Sopranos so good, penning the scripts... and you got Scorsese directing Steve Buscemi as the lead character. Plus it's set during the Prohibition-Era. And, last but not least, the icing on the cake of having free reign since it's on HBO.

It can only be good!

I can't wait.

Check out the HD trailer.

Check out it's page on HBO's site.

*edited to add different trailer.

It looks really good. I keep telling myself that I am going to cancel HBO to save money. I love True Blood and Bill Maher. I loved Sopranos (except the last season or so). Now they start this. I guess I will just keep paying.

We thought we could live without HBO too. Didn't have it for 3 months and then True Blood came back and we caught the first ep at a friends house. It was all over after that. Looking forward to this as well as more Kenny Fucking Powers, The Henrickson clan, and many many other original shows.

Treme could not have been any better. And the best part? No commercials. Real drama for 1 solid hour. Also like the Sopranos.

I'm going to try the show about the Pacific out on Saturday. All the episodes are on back to back on hot-hot-humid Saturday afternoon.

Looking forward to Boardwalk. Was in AC last week and nothing's changed.

Treme was awesome. I just couldn't believe what they did with Goodman's character. That felt like a solid punch to the gut.

I watched The Pacific when it debuted. It was good, but not as good as I hoped. Band of Brothers was better... for it's time.

The Pacific scores better on production value and the mere fact of being shot in HD.

I thot "Treme" was a bit meh...probably because it was nowhere near as good as "The Wire." And "Hung" I lost interest in. "True Blood" is pretty cool, but I am really looking forward to "Boardwalk Empire." It looks amazing. The shit on the TV these days is really quite good. Between HBO, Showtime, AMC and FX there's just really good programming. I don't even waste my time with network unless the reviews are through the roof.

This would be quite a crazy statement if made just ten years ago.

Agreed - I'm beginning to wish that I could get JUST HBO and Showtime. Who needs all of that other crap?

Even sports is a waste of time for the most part these days. More about trying to sell us stuff (EVEN in the corners during the game) than anything worth spending 3 hours on.

The funniest show of the last two years "Party Down" was on Starz...seriously. I love "Breaking Bad" and Madmen" on AMC and just now am getting into "Rubicon." In the DVD queue (based on solid reviews for awhile) are "Modern Family" and "Sons of Anarchy."

Sadly, shows like "Two and a Half Men" win awards and get the Nielsens still. But cable owns the award shows and with the advent of hulu and cabling our laptops to our HDTVs, network crap is no longer dominant. I'm looking forward to seeing how Conan can stretch his brand of humor on cable...

Indeed. Off to a very good start.

I liked the bit about the mermaid when they were having dinner.

Every vote counts!

Yeah...there are certain words I can't stand and that was one of them. Any other variant would have been preferred by me but I'm not quite sure what the slang du jour was in the 20's. Nevertheless, I like the show.

My only concern with time pieces such as Boardwalk is it has to progress year by year to remain consistent and often ends in boredom. Although, MASH seemed to make a good go of it. Time will tell. If they can manage to keep the storyline fresh it will be awesome for quite some time.
