Do you watch the Sunday morning talk shows?

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

Do you watch the Sunday morning talk shows?

You know, "Meet the Press," "Face the Nation," etc.

If so, how often? Which one(s)?

Nope. I've sworn off all punditry shows and all of those fit the bill. I do like Bob Schieffer, but he falls into the same trap as the rest of them a lot of the time(less than others although). Softball questions and very little follow up.

Almost never. Ridiculous questions and party-line rhetoric is all you get.

The Sunday gas bag shows have been a hard-to-break habit for me. I watch them, but lately I'll surf over to MSNBC's Sunday morning programming if all I'm hearing are softball interviews and bullshit from the standard lineup of milquetoast or crackpot pundits. At least the MSNBC weekend morning shows include people selected for some expertise in the topics discussed, topics that are far more varied and interesting and a greater amount of time to delve more deeply into a topic.

Sunday mornings are for Thomas the Train or Rescue Bots, maybe Mickey Mouse Club House. If the kid is distracted enough by that, I peruse the news on my phone or laptop.

I suspect both of us are better for it.

But aren't the cable shows simply masquerading as "hard-hitting" by actually being louder with more words-per-minute?

David Brinkley on Sunday morning was appointment TV for me when I was in high school, and into my 20s. I loved that man.

Fareed Zakaria's CNN sunday show is typically the best hour of discussion and news features on TV for the entire week. Never miss it.

The rest of the Sunday shows are generally painful. I don't even bother trying to listen to most of the guest interviews. Sometimes you can learn something from the panel discussion on "This Week with George Stephanopolus." Sunday mornings require a firm fast forward finger.

The best interviewer after Zakaria is Chris Wallace on FOX. Ya, he's a bit biased, but he's a very sharp questioner, wish there were liberals as aggressive & talented as he is. I find the whole FOX presentation unsettling so I often skip it - I don't want to use bad language on the Sabbath.

I never thought about it, I probably am from your generation but I never would have watched a news show in my 20s, let alone as a high schooler. I was too busy dating the cheerleaders, scoring touchdowns for the football team, and writing my novel. Or something like that.

So I never much watched David Brinkley, but now that you mention it, he did have dignity about him without being pompous. Understated and sharp.

On Sundays I avoid the talk shows in favor of CBS Sunday Morning.

The short answer is no. 20 years ago I used to. Just this week, because my son is visiting from Europe and asked, I put it on.

Everyone is spinning if not outright lying. Watching it was very depressing. It reminded me of just how much trouble our democracy, and nation, is in.

On weekend mornings on MSNBC there is less of the standard Washington political screaming and more guests who are knowledgeable on issues and have a non-Washington base.

If I am up early, it is either CBS Sunday Morning or that week's F1 race.

He let Sam 'n' Cokie destroy the guests, then sent them off cordially. "Thank you for being here, Senator. Good to see you. Hope you can come again."
