Close O'Keefe Instead?

If the district closed O'Keefe and Marquette, could they turn the existing building into condos, add single units to the rest of the block? They could keep ownership of the property and earn the rent income from the properties. MMSD could even create a special "property management" class at East HS and have the kids earn credit by taking care of the place for free.

Maybe to keep traditions going, people who move in can be transported to their new home by canoe.

If we don't turn our downtown schools into condos, then they're going to convert some farm school out on the periphery into sprawl. Don't these neighborhood people understand that we need densify?

Actually a better option along the same lines may be to close the Doyle Administration building downtown. Build high rise condos or apartments on the site and invest the profits from selling it off into an endowment account.

This situation also brings up one of the failings of New Urbanism.

You have Union Corners being built with hundreds of units but they are not going to be units for families. Most people with kids are going for the three bedroom with a yard so the kid can play. If even one hundred units with in Union Corners were designed and designated for families with young kids people would not be thinking of closing near east schools.

And the whole idea that Inclusionary Zoning is going to bring families into these new developments is a joke.
