Eliminate the Lottery?

Postby swifty » Wed Feb 18, 2004 2:31 pm

Wisconsin stealing from the stupid, I call it. Do we really want to be involved in this kind of scam at a governmental level? Is it worth the $50 it saves on yer property tax? Is it because of that wacky TV show they put on? I say end it, and make the scum over at WMC pay their fair share.

The lottery is the lamest way to save $50 on our property tax bills EVAR!
Let's get rid of it. It's not like people can't go to Illinois or Minnesota to get their lottery fix.

I've always thought of the lottery as a tax on people who are bad at math. And a very regressive taxation system at that. Only individuals pay it - no corporations. And I can't imagine the wealthy spend a whole lotta dough on scratch-offs.

Correct me if I am wrong (like I have to asked):

If Wisconsin repeals the amendments that allow the Lottery and racing, that automatically shut down all of the casinos as they will no longer be a legal enterprise.

Even with that added to the mix, I still would vote to eliminate gambling in Wiscosnin.

And there's no need to even wonder about what that would do to tribal poverty? Oh, I know. Even if poverty, illiteracy, suicide rates and inequality increases for Indians, it's all worth it if the gambling-addicted of Wisconsin are limited to only gambling at poker nights, bar machines, and thousands of locations on the internet. Good trade.

Hotshot, it's hard to tell whether you're either being obtuse or whether you actually can't follow a fairly nuanced debate.

Either way... (not particularly good) point made.

As points go, I think this one rates better than that, JJ. Of course, it's not hard when people advocate radical changes willy-nilly -- like eliminating tribal businesses across the state -- while failing to addresss any of the obvious economic harm that would come to the tribes. But in the future, I'll try to keep this kind of logical rain off your parade.

If I'm remembering correctly, money from the lottery goes towards school funding. Your property tax bill will go up a lot more than $50 if you get rid of the lottery.

I'm going to answer my own question...

No, Steve, the lottery does not fund education in Wisconsin. It all goes to property tax relief.

Everything you always wanted to know about legalized gambling in Wisconsin but were afraid to ask
