One thing he knows is that communities around the country fear their arts centers will "turn into a burden for taxpayers."

"I've not known one building yet that has shut down because it is not being used enough," he adds.

He might be the right person for the job.

The private, nonprofit Overture Center Foundation, which took over operations of the Downtown arts center in January, expects to meet a lofty fundraising goal of $2.36 million — triple its previous high — and close the 2011-12 fiscal year in the black with cash for capital expenses and reserves.

I'm glad to see that drama might be ending. I wonder if some people still think it's too big for Madison. Seems to be selling shows out like crazy.

I don't want to piss in the punch bowl, but a careful reading indicates most of the crowing is over projections, not done deals.

If private donations really are pouring in, why is an increase in the city contribution necessary? The actual accounting is only done through May, and at that point they were behind expectations.

I would hold-off until 2013 before doing your endzone dance. That will be quite a stunner if Overture has proven viable, especially in this down economy.

Fair enough, but my experience in non-profits is that publicized projections are pretty much a done deal. You can piss in the punch bowl as long as you didn't eat asparagus.

We've had a down economy and then there is this:

A big budget carries risks, but Overture has a strong partner in Broadway Across America, and the arts center set records for subscriptions the last three years

I'm not doing an endzone dance, but I'm glad we didn't turn it into a library or casino as some have suggested.

Certainly the best case scenario is for the place to succeed as intended. Even if we made it into a profitable, world class casino & brothel, we'd be greatly diminished as a city by not having a performance center.

Where is MadMind? I'm sure he would have an opinion on this.
