throwing away petitions

Postby Galoot » Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:35 am

I saw a post on FB by a former student (not a FB friend of mine) along the lines of

"I know some guy who got like a thousand signatures on petitions, and all he was going to do with them was throw them away"

It's obviously a felony to do this, and I posted that the person who wrote that is obligated to report it. Of course he won't--being a "snitch" is about the worst thing possible for today's teenagers and 20-somethings.

Can the cops question him about this and try to get information about the crime? Would they bother?

Have I asked the cops? I think I'll call them today and ask, but I haven't asked yet, no.

I'm not going to spread the FB account around, rabble.

Ugh. Madison police said it isn't in their purview, and suggested I look for a GAB hotline. I poked around and found this

http://gab.wi.gov/node/2112

Which suggested that if I have any evidence of fraud...I should contact my local police department.

Not much help.

I signed a petition to sign long ago. Now where do I sign the real deal or do I mail in my own?

Thousands of petition signatures thrown away? Doesn't ring true, but if it happened it might be a federal offense. So call the FBI, as they would have the wherewithal to trace it down.

The legal term for this is "Judicai jerkcircus" which roughly translates to "Justice or Judicial circle-jerk". This has been further explained by the U.S Supreme Court as "once again, you're fucked". Good luck obtaining justice in America.

Circle jerk indeed, and rather frustrating.

Henry, I agree that it might easily qualify as a federal crime, so I left a message with the local FBI office, with enough information that they could pursue it, or call me for more about the issue.

@ Bwis53 - Here is a site where you can search by your zip code to find a petition signing event:
http://grassroots.wisdems.org/page/event/search_simple
Any eligible Wisconsin voter can download the petitions, sign them and also sign the Certification of Circulator. You can mail your signed petition to the address on the petition. I have a friend who is working out of the country during the petition time frame and this is what she is doing. Also, anyone living in an area where the petition gathering may be suspect, this is a way to be sure your petition reaches the GAB.

I would imagine you can't swing a dead cat in this town without hitting someone collecting recall signatures.

Just got back from the dog park - there was a guy collecting signatures there.

Was he having much luck in getting dogs to sign?

Oh, that's right. I forgot, people get facebook accounts because they want their privacy.

Take a screen shot of the Facebook post and email that along with the page address and the account holders name to United Wisconsin and the Democratic party so they can pursue legal action. DO NOT tell the person you are reporting that you are passing along that information as they may try to destroy the evidence trail.

Then upload the page here:

http://www.archive.org

so other people can view it and it's saved in original form not just as a jpeg.

I sent a screen shot to the PR address listed for United Wisconsin (didn't find any other, more useful addresses on their web page) and to the info@wisdems.org address.

Since it has a jpeg attached, I tend to think they will just toss the email, but we'll see.
