I've seen it before, but I will have to say that was a good ad. Well done and effective. Too bad for him it's making the rounds. Careful what you wish for.

Meh. It was ok. At least he's finally stopped using the 250,000 jobs number. I'm surprised he didn't talk about all the poor people who will lose health care. That seems to be a winning talking point.

So I watched the ad again and it struck me how proud he was of cutting the budget. These cuts were all aimed at the poor to middle class. ALL of them. Please correct me if I'm wrong Meade. Where were any sacrifices to the corporations and the wealthy among us. Here is a prime example of how some have done well for themselves:

Spectrum Brands gave its top executive a $13.7 million compensation package last year, according to documents filed last week with federal regulators, but he hasn't gotten all of it yet...

Spectrum Brands recently received a $4 million forgivable loan from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. The terms include keeping at least 470 full-time jobs in Madison and spending at least $40 million on equipment or building improvements, through Sept. 30, 2016

So they received a forgivable loan to only KEEP jobs not create them and this guy receives a 13.7 million dollar payout.

Please explain to me how this makes things better for all of us.

How does it not make things better for all of us to keep 470 full-time jobs in Madison and have Spectrum spend at least $40 million on equipment or building improvements, through Sept. 30, 2016?

We should shovel out taxpayers money to any corporation that hints at leaving? Is that Walker's plan in creating a quarter million new jobs?

No. And no. Read the article again. No taxpayer dollars are being shoveled out.

No! No! He thinks the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp is a private enterprise. It just has money to shovel by magic, since it has produced no products or services by which money is made in the usual way, having existed only a few months.

HV's web link says:
"Applicants [for WEDC financing] should work with a bank and a local development corporation to structure a loan package."

That's all well and good, except a forgivable loan implies someone's basically cosigning, the way parents do when kids buy a house (and sometimes regret it). Who's cosigning these forgivable loans? The state of Wisconsin!

We taxpayers are on the hook, whether we like it or not, if Spectrum defaults. What's keeping them from defaulting and walking away? Not a lot, in today's corporate environment.

Would you personally cosign or guarantee a loan under those conditions? I wouldn't. Some bank ends up with an empty factory or some semi-obsolete, used manufacturing equipment (depending on the loan terms) and the state ends up with empty hands, if whatever Spectrum makes at that place doesn't sell.

Walker is delivering his State of the State address shortly after the recall petitions are due. He'll use it as the start of his reelection campaign, doing the usual denying and lying.

Walker to deliver State of the State speech Jan. 25

Last year Walker revealed little in his State of the State speech which came just 10 days before he unveiled his collective bargaining proposal.

A couple days ago I read a short news report that Walker will be speaking at the American Enterprise Institute. Then I got the following in an email that might shed light on his further agenda:

Andy Biggs and the Wall Street Journal are on a crusade to turn public opinion against public employees' pensions. Biggs writes for the American Enterprise Institute (Gingrich, Cheney, Bolton, et al). His article outlines all the talking points we could soon see Walker use to "reform" the WRS. Please do not fail to read this attack on defined benefit pension plans for public employees. (It was in the 1-4-2012 WSJ). Knowledge is power!

edit: Just got another email. The full Wall Street Journal article is now available only to subscribers.

Thankfully, we wiped out a $3.6 billion deficit without raising taxes.Scot-Tea

There are two lies within this single sentence. First, Walker didn't eliminate the deficit -- at least according to his own standards on which he campaigned on. Walker promised to balance the budget using generally accepted accounting principles. These principles require that you not push the debt further down the road, properly balancing the budget (and your debts) within the fiscal year.

But the governor didn't do that. In fact, Walker's budget is projected to create a $3 billion deficit under GAAP standards -- a larger deficit than what was projected to occur when Doyle passed his last budget.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is at it again, this time with no bid contracts.

The state will use an independent third party to observe the evaluation process of bids for a new statewide school information system after tax breaks were offered to one company contingent upon them winning the contract.

That offer to Skyward, Inc., was rescinded after the Department of Administration found out it had been made by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

The state also halted the bidding process for the $15 million state project. Bids were originally due on Tuesday.

All of which raises the question: what measurable results is the state getting for its development dollars?

Turns out they haven't been keeping much track:

http://host.madison.com/ct/news/opinion ... f887a.html

Auditors found the state did not comply with the law to require and report information on the actual results of the investment of tax dollars for job creation. In fact, 88 percent of all the state’s 139 programs did not report both the expected and the actual results.

I believe I posted this link in another topic earlier, but it's such essential reading it deserves to be here as well. These are your dollars, people.

Walker puts new steps in place after WEDC error
Gov. Scott Walker said the state's semi-private economic development agency will put new safeguards in place after it offered tax breaks to a Wisconsin company contingent on it winning a state bid.

Walker told members of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation board at its Thursday meeting that from now on WEDC will ask companies if they are submitting or intend to submit a bid for state work before offering them incentives.
...
Offering Skyward incentives while others are bidding on the same project gives Skyward an advantage others don't have.

He's not wrong, the laws are.
Jadin says he wants to work with Walker to change state law to make clear the agency can make such offers to companies.
