One new arrest and additional information to be given at noon today.

Maybe this belongs in the "Governor of the Year" topic.

Ex-Walker aide charged with three theft counts

Tim Russell, a former campaign and county aide to Gov. Scott Walker, was arrested by authorities on Thursday and charged with three theft counts as part of the ongoing John Doe investigation into Walker staffers, sources said.

Computer records show Russell was charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor count of theft. One source said the charges are tied to Operation Freedom, an annual military appreciation day held at the zoo.
...

Also charged Thursday was Brian Pierick, Russell's longtime partner. Pierick was charged with one felony count of child enticement.

Where else will the John Doe investigation lead?

...and Kevin Kavanaugh, Walker's appointee to the Milwaukee County Veteran Service Commission.

Kavanaugh is charged with five felonies for theft and fraudulent writings by a corporate officer. He was the treasurer of the Milwaukee Purple Heart chapter at the time of the dispute over the $11,000 for Operation Freedom.

As a strong supporter of "Governor of the Year" Walker I think it should be pointed out that the charity for veterans was a very noble cause and this journalist (if you can call him that) is obviously very biased. For instance why doesn't he mention the Democrats who were stealing from a military charity and fondling children at the zoo that day? Why does he only go after the Republicans? Also, there were several Walker aides that weren't stealing or fondling children and no where in the article is this fact mentioned.

oh please pj

"Tim Russell, a longtime Walker campaign and county staffer, was charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor count of embezzlement. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said the charges are tied to Operation Freedom, an annual military appreciation day held at the Milwaukee County Zoo.

The complaint says that Russell diverted to his personal bank account more than $21,000 intended for Operation Freedom, using some of those dollars to go on Hawaiian and Caribbean vacations with his domestic partner.

Other funds were used, the complaint says, for Russell to attend a weekend political strategy session in December 2010 with Herman Cain and his chief of staff, Mark Block, to discuss Cain's now-defunct presidential campaign."

Russell was using Operation Freedom funds for campaigning? Walker better hope none of this money turned up in his election campaign.

"Also charged Thursday was Brian Pierick, Russell's longtime partner and a staffer at the state Department of Public Instruction, and Kevin Kavanaugh, Walker's appointee to the Milwaukee County Veteran Service Commission.

Kavanaugh, 61, of Cudahy, is charged with five felonies for theft and fraudulent writings by a corporate officer. He was the treasurer of the Milwaukee Purple Heart chapter at the time of the dispute over the $11,000 for Operation Freedom.

Prosecutors say he stole more than $42,000 in donations intended to families of U.S. service members killed or wounded in Iraq."

Oh man. Can a person get more disgusting? Why, yes, apparently they can.

"Pierick, 48, was charged with two felony counts for child enticement. He is an office operations assistant for education for homeless youth at DPI dealing with education for homeless children and youth, according to the agency's website.
Patrick Gasper, a spokesman for the Department of Public Instruction, said Pierick was being let go from his job Thursday at the decision of agency human resources and state schools superintendent Tony Evers."

And this little tidbit:
"Herkowski (American Legion) said that he was surprised when he was informed by Milwaukee County officials that his group would no longer be handling the money and it would be handed over to Heritage Guard...He said that he was told by Milwaukee County officials that the responsibility for the money was being taken away from the American Legion because it has an unusual non-profit status that was difficult to explain to corporate donors. Milwaukee County wanted a more typical 501(c)3 type non-profit to make it easy to understand the donations were tax-exempt so fundraising would be easier, Herkowski said he was told. "They said it would be easier to get the money," he said."

Or, when you fund fleas, you can let the fleas worry about the details.

Any inkling if there's more in the offing, or if the harvest is complete? It's hard to imagine anyone making excuses for Walker's profound judge of character in cronies, confidantes & contributors. Must be missing a few merit badges from his stellar turn as an eagle scout.

The article said the investigation was ongoing. That might mean it's not yet concluded, though you can't tell with John Doe investigations.

They seem to be getting pretty close to Walker.

Hopefully political ads will bring this up, countering the claim that the recall is only about collective bargaining.

Dems file new election complaint against Walker

The Democratic Party of Wisconsin has filed a new complaint alleging Gov. Scott Walker committed a campaign finance violation by not reporting the purchasing of Internet web domain names by a former aide who has been charged with embezzlement.

The complaint filed Friday with the Government Accountability Board alleges Walker's campaign did not account for the purchases as in-kind contributions or reimburse Tim Russell, Walker's former deputy chief of staff while Milwaukee County executive.

The criminal complaint released Thursday shows that Russell purchased a variety of domain names in support of Walker's run for governor.

"Walker nominee Petersen withdraws nomination to investment board."

"Petersen told Gov. Scott Walker's appointments aide on Friday that he was removing his name from consideration for the board. SWIB manages $83.1 billion for the state retirement system, which includes state and municipal employees, public school teachers and other workers... The legislative audit questioned what it called an 'appearance of a conflict.' Petersen voted in 2000 to have SWIB invest $80 million in a business with ties to a company in which he owned stock."

"Petersen, a Madison real estate developer whose son is a well-connected lobbyist, was a SWIB trustee for a 10-year term ending in 2003. Walker's nomination of him to return to the board drew criticism from the former head of the investment board. David Mills, SWIB's retired executive director, said Tuesday that Petersen was "over-involved" in investment decisions at SWIB and was vice chairman of the board at a time when it had serious governance issues."

Perhaps all the attention on the unscrupulous and ethically challenged Walker cronies and that slimy Gableman character is starting to sink in a little. I've often wondered why someone of the conservative mindset, trumpeting the private sector panacea, would choose a career in public service. Looks more and more like their motives for public service = opportunity for personal gain, to cash in at the public's expense.
