Chief Erwin keeps capitol from descending into chaos

He started the new program for keeping order today, and now we know it's illegal to hold up a blank sign inside the capitol and offend the delicate sensibilities of, well, readers of blank signs unless one gets a permit first.

This is gonna be fun to watch.

Political theater, this time the Capitol Police become actors. Both sides trying to win friends and influence people.

Ah, but will I get arrested if I carry a Pro-Life sign;)

What about one that says "I (Heart) Scott Walker"?

So they are enforcing a policy that has been in place for years. Oh the horror! So now whatever self righteous group that wants to put on their little dog and pony show has to actually follow the rules and get a permit. Oh my god how will democracy survive?

So, to protest your government you need a permit issued by the government to protest them?

If you can't see the absurd nature to that logic there is no reason to discuss this issue will you.

From where, specifically, do you get the right to protest the government?

Have you ever read the First Amendment? Do you understand what those words mean? (Rhetorical questions, because obviously you are clueless.)

Guess those truths weren't so self-evident for Larry here.

Well, you know, "separation of church and state" isn't in the Constitution, either.

Book Police, are you saying we get the right from the Declaration of Independence? Please notice the word "specifically" in my question.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Yeah, come on TBP, you should know by now that you have to put the spoon right into The Pedant Meade's mouth.

Didn't think you were being literal. No, Larry, it's not in there. It is in that pesky First Amendment Henry mentioned, but I imagine you'll say that that right derives from the government, thus brilliantly winning your own straw argument. I don't really care to play that game.

So instead, I'll ask you where -- specifically -- you derive the right to put anything other than almond milk on your breakfast cereal. Or what gives you the right -- specifically -- to select the color of your living room carpet.

Kaffee: Corporal, would you turn to the page in this book that says where the mess hall is, please.
Cpl. Barnes: Well, Lt. Kaffee, that's not in the book, sir.
Kaffee: You mean to say in all your time at Gitmo you've never had a meal?
Cpl. Barnes: No, sir. Three squares a day, sir.
Kaffee: I don't understand. How did you know where the mess hall was if it's not in this book?
Cpl. Barnes: Well, I guess I just followed the crowd at chow time, sir.

I'll reframe my question in order to make it easier:

From where do the people get their rights?

The answer actually is in the Declaration.
