From where do the people get their rights?

The answer actually is in the Declaration.

Rights are recognized in the Constitution, not granted by that document.

Henry, he's trying to trick you again.

The Declaration says "Creator," not "God," Larry. And even if it did say "God," that fellow probably bears very little resemblance to yours, given Jefferson's personal beliefs.

But my Creator -- the Big Bang, if you get right down to it -- is in no way precluded from consideration as the "Creator" of the Declaration of Independence. It's a vague term, and I'd like to think it was written vaguely for a reason. Mostly, so that toolbags like you wouldn't use the word "God" as a cudgel.

Good, BookPolice. You're getting warmer, almost burning up, but you seem to be having trouble saying it. Two words.

Given the ecclesiastical bent of this conversation, if I'm getting warmer -- nearly burning up -- by approaching your noxious point, perhaps it's in my best interest to avoid your toasty perspective.

The devil can cite scripture for his purpose.

It isn't scripture. Okay, I'll give you some more help. It is in the Introduction and, here, I'll make it a little broader so it's easier for you: Four words. It's not necessarily religious. In fact, it's arguably more philosophical than religious.

What does your diversion have to do with the right to protest in the Capitol?

Right to protest.

If there was a diversion (by the way, there wasn't one), it began with HawkHead:

So, to protest your government you need a permit issued by the government to protest them?

If you can't see the absurd nature to that logic there is no reason to discuss this issue will you.

Right to protest.

Yes, as in Bill of Rights. First Amendment: speech, assembly and petition.

A friend of mine took Meade's wife, Ann Althouse, for a law seminar a few years back. My friend told me that Ann would twirl her hair with her finger, speak in this weird fake British accent and awkwardly try to engage students using the Socratic method. It would lead to some funny but embarrassing places. This friend further told me that if you tried to engage Ann Althouse in the hallway or during office hours she would keep up this buffer so she would not have to engage in normal human interaction.

Can you imagine Meade having to suffer this day in and day out in the isolated Althouse household?

This might explain why Meade comes here and makes an ass of himself. He is obviously compensating for something at home.

"Nature and of Nature's God"

Though it does not mean what Meade thinks it means. Though, given his "teacher," it is hard to be surprised.

So Hawkhead is it your contention that there should be absolutely no restrictions on the right to protest the government?

If not, then what makes the reasonable policies at the capitol so egregious?

When did I say there should be absolutely no restrictions on the right to protest the governent? That is your assumption based on what I said.

I said you shouldn't have to apply for a permit from the government to protest the government.

Secondly, you infer that the policies at the capitol are reasonable. I do not agree with your argument. Nice use of semantics to try to "make" that policy reasonalbe.

So you are ok with restrictions just not permits. Do you find the reasons behind the permits to be bullshit, unconstitutional, or you just don't like them?
