Favorites: Near East Side, Harmony, Glass Nickle, the zoo, most of the lake shores, picnic point, UW Campus nooks and crannies, Olbrich, Arboretum, Capitol Rotunda, bike paths.

Least: most of the West Side, the bus system - oh wait that's not a place. How about the Fitchburg subdivision hell.

I guess I don't have a lot of least favorite places. Union Corners isn't pretty or anything but it's not an eyesore. Just a bunch of space in use by homeless people till they finally get going on it.

Favorites: Jennifer St, the park over there with the bridge and the ducks (no, I don't know the name). Atwood Ave, The Union Terrace, Hilldale in its current iteration, and the hidden pockets of the north side (as discovered during the ride the drive).

Least Favorite: The big box sprawl on the far eastern end of East Wash, Eastgate (although I do kind of love that it's the one place that has looked the same for my entire life); Hwy 51/S Stoughton Rd; and increasingly, State St.

Favorite: Tenney Park lagoon when it's covered with ice and I'm on skates.

Least favorite: State Street after 9 or 10 p.m. on a weekend. Ground zero for the city's depressing drinking culture.

...Hilldale in its current iteration...

At least someone likes it. I thought it was universally hated.

Jenifer St has a park? With a bridge and ducks?

Is it the one along the Yahara, which has several bridges and loads of ducks and is really, really pretty right now when you stand on one of the bridges and look down the river?

That's prolly it. That footbridge connects the two Jenifers. And there's ducks. And the occasional muskrat.

Great spot! I saw an otter there one morning, and in the spring the touch-me-nots are fun to play with.

You saw an otter? At the Jenny street footbridge?

Damn. I've been wandering that shoreline for ten years, paddling it for the last three and I've never seen an otter. I got a glimpse of a beaver in Starkweather creek. No otters.

Least Fav: Verona Rd. traffic crawls during the weekday mornings & evenings

Fav: picnic point (if that hasn't gone to hell now too)
*What is a "union corner"? I know where Malt House is but I've never heard of a "union corner" before. Please explain. Thanks

Union Corners is an old name for the neighborhood the Malt House is in, and now has been applied to the failed development across Milwaukee Street there. The building (and, I believe, the bar itself) housing the Malt House dates to the Civil War, when it was a haunt for Union soldiers.

So it is said--Stu is probably the authority around here on that.

Didn't that old bar have the name union in it? Ugh, hasn't been that long since I saw it that way. Memory going away.

Yeah. Union Tavern. If I recall it sat where the beer garden is now.

I know the bar in the new building is from the original. Don't know about the rest of it.

I love sitting at that bar thinking that some of those trees were probably alive at the same time as Washington or Daniel Boone.
