A friend told me tonight that I should vote the ballot line by line and not straight Democratic. He says he read online that if you vote just straight party, it won't count for Obama because of the way the ballot is set up. I'm skeptical. Anyone else know anything about this?

I would suggest waiting until the sample ballot has been published, and then find out that way, rather than believing something someone says they read on the Internet.

I always vote line by line anyway, partly because I like to select at least one third party candidate in a down ticket race and partly because I enjoy having a conversation with my ballot.

"Mitt Romney? No, not you. Barack Obama. Tommy Thompson? No, not you. Tammy Baldwin."

After months of hand wringing, deceptive advertisements and the ups and downs of the campaigns and polling, talking to your ballot gives your voting experience a personal aspect. You might even try pointing at Mitt Romney's name and saying, "you're a douche" as you complete the little arrow for Obama.

I don't know, call me crazy, but voting is the one time I have power over people like Mitt Romney. I like to let him know.

Sample Ballot? Here you go.

On my sample, I can't for the life of me figure out how voting one party would mess anything up.

Wow. Out of 9 races, I only have a choice in 3 of them as 6 are races where someone is running unopposed.
This is not what Democracy looks like.

One more reason to vote line by line: I absolutely refuse to "vote" for anyone running unopposed.

Not me. I have no problem telling someone like Fred Risser that I think he deserves the job.

Right. I voted for Dianne Hesselbein in the 79th Assembly primary, and I have no problem voting for her again despite the fact it is an unopposed election.

If you lived in Vermont, you would have lots of choices on the ballot. For example, consider the candidates for Secretary of State:

You could vote for the Democratic candidate, Jim Candos.
Or you could vote for the Republican candidate, Jim Candos.
Or you could vote for the Progressive candidate, Jim Candos.
Or you could vote for the Working Families candidate, Jim Candos.

Everybody loves Jim!

Well, almost everybody. The four major parties in the state may have all nominated Jim Candos, but the fifth party (Liberty Union, another left-wing party) has their own candidate, Mary Alice Herbert.
