Telecom Lobby Decides State EDU pays more for Internet

Postby mvalfierno » Fri Nov 16, 2012 10:15 pm

Inflammatory? Depends.
Apologetic? No.
Summary: The WI State Biennial Budget most recently enacted forbids the UW (System, campuses and extension) from being a member of an organization that provides telecom services.
So? The UWs are some of the ~500 education, research and public service organizations that come together around WiscNet (THE non-for-profit network service provider in the state that provides services the for profits can't).
Without WiscNet the UWs: lose buying power, lose the Wisconsin Idea (and based on the same legislation lose the ability to access Internet2-the US high speed research network).
Without the UWs: the education soup in Wisconsin is greatly lessened.
What's been done to try to address this? Pretty much damn near everything.
Did it work? Not yet.
What do you suggest? Sign this federal petition to shine some light on the issues at a federal level:

Well, this does warrant a great deal of discussion. I am still very pissed over AT&T's influence regarding the rejection of Federal dollars for expanded broad band access in this state. Appearently the efforts continue on even though the American Legislative Exchange Council got their balls pinched a little bit. Thanks for keeping this in focus.

Well ALEC won this, so far, as far as I can tell. Wait for the next dominoes to fall: local control of k12s, citizen free speech (can you believe that "citizen" needs to be specified?, ... papers please?

Why don't you ask Chairman Mao or your Muslim, Kenyan born President what he thinks of your socialist plots to destroy capitalism in pursuit of "free speech?" You know what else is free? Welfare, so you can sit on your fat ass and eat caviar and brie while you watch your 60" flat screen television that I paid for with my taxes. Did you know that the Social Security Administration is stockpiling hollow tip bullets so they can send job creators to concentration camps? Obama hates successful people, he wants us all to be dependent on government handouts, otherwise known as "free stuff" like free speech.

Flame attended.

PJ,
You are very good. I isolated the following bit I heard last weekend and I thought you might like it...

"There was this guy by the name of James Watt, who was Ronald Reagan's secretary of the interior. And he made a very profound statement once. He said, noise is power. And the noisier we are as a culture, Americans he was talking about, the more powerful we appear to be to others. Isn't that interesting? "; Bernie Krause, TTBOOK, 11/11/12.

I just don't understand your original post. The budget was enacted in July 2012, right? Has anything changed with wiscnet and UW since then? Not as far as I know. And I rarely sign internet petitions because they seem useless.

Meh, the OP lost interest, moved on to better stories like whether Anonymous hacked ORCA. Besides, forons respond too slow. He needs an answer and he needs it NOW!
