To be fair I think there is some sparring happening on the other side of this equation.

Although, I regard this as an advance.

I haven't parsed it all yet, but it is relevant to this thread/thought. It could be half baloney, but...

If you can listen to more than 15 seconds of anything RadioLab puts out, you're a candidate for Self-Flagellator of the Decade. These affected stooges put the "wee" in twee.

Really? How?

Are you one of those people who find it easy to lie to yourself? If so, apparently, good on you.

Check out this liar:

Pretty extreme example (and reminder) of how "neighbors" are capable of treating one another.

I find it interesting when two authors who seem, politically, polar opposites scare the shit out me speaking very similiar truths:

I am up too late and poking around too much here.
I found this deliciously ironic:

Juan Williams' "Muzzled"

Muzzled: The Assault on Honest Debate" comes out on July 26; looking forward to it.

From Amazon's product description:
In today’s partisan world, where media provocateurs rule the airwaves and political correctness dictates what can and cannot be said with impunity, Williams shows how the honest exchange of ideas and the search for solutions and reasonable compromise is deliberately muzzled. Only those toeing the party’s line—the screaming voices of the extremist—get airtime and dominate the discussion in politics and the media. Each side, liberal and conservative, preaches to a choir that revels in expressions of anger, ideology, conspiracies, and demonized opponents. The result is an absence of truth-telling and honest debate about the facts.

Because I found Williams take down of Chomsky shortly after 9/11 disgusting. Apearantly Williams found "religion" in propaganda. What could have been easier or more lucrative in that context?! So ... I found his complaint embedded in your post a serious "lady doth protest[ing] too much" kind of thing.

Whatever, I wonder if a public divided can ever recognize that we are so easily divided. I find this notion equally frustrating and fascinating, and this is truly troublesome.

p.s.- yeah, I am glad you liked Steven Pollan's words. I am not sure that I liked them so much, other than realistically appreciating them.

This piece shows me that we all are required to think very carefully about how we approach our democratic experiment.

Wow! Are we collectively ready for this truth telling?

I hope so.
Our collective success depends on wrapping our minds around where we have been and where we are headed.

Yada yada, long arc of truth and justice and all.
I suspect it only works out that way if we don't have to wait a decade or so to find out how we have been worked.

A cross thread, if you care to think about what...

Did anyone here watch PBS's Frontline today?
If you did not, you should look up this 2+ decade coverage of fellow Americans of Milwaukee.
I found it very enlightening, and depressing.
I remember back in the early nineties watching the beginning of the coverage that played out today with this current report.
I also remember listening to Limbaugh back then do his job and make a special effort to trash Moyer's efforts. That effort worked swimmingly then.
Will similar efforts work today?

Regarding my initial question - I guess that the significance of a truth or a lie depends on our ability to see it.
In my mind, the following piece compels us to explore this space:
http://americanreviewmag.com/stories/Th ... journalism
"But here is what we do know: Making knowledge public does not a knowledgeable public make. If we care about making democracy work, we ought to dig further into this mystery."
