WI Supreme Court: vouchers and outside money

Postby Henry Vilas » Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:07 am

Conservative Justice Patience Roggensack is running for reelection (a ten year term). Fellow conservatives, who dislike public schools, are supporting her because they believe she will allow the distruction of public education through the expansion of the state voucher program (where taxpayer money can be used to pay for religious education). Much of her campaign contributions are coming from wealthly conservatives who live out of state.

The Fund for Parental Choice, a conduit fund affiliated with School Choice Wisconsin, recently directed $20,550 to Roggensack’s campaign. The money came from a dozen wealthy contributors from across the country, including heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune — Alice and Jim Walton and his wife, Lynne — and Amway heir Dick DeVos and his wife, Betty.

The conduit’s donor base was hardly more diverse in other races in which it participated. Of the roughly $110,000 the conduit directed to campaigns last year, the vast majority came from eight families. Susan Mitchell, the former president of School Choice Wisconsin, and her husband, George, were the only contributors from Wisconsin.

Another reason not to shop at Wal-Mart.
