This brings up a question. Sarah has dropped out, but her name is on the ballot. If she were to still get the most votes, does this mean anything. Would Mertz automatically win or would the process go to the school board to appoint someone.

If she wins the election and is unable to serve, school board would appoint to fill vacancy.

So, for someone annoyed at this whole election, would it be better to:
- write-in Mirilli, who ought to be on the ballot with Mertz had Manski done the honorable thing and withdrawn prior to the primary
- vote for Manski and hope she wins, putting the spotlight on the school board to make a decision
- or just give up and vote Mertz?

One way to think it through is read TJ Mertz's blog, which is here:

http://madisonamps.org/

I have found him to be reasonable, his dedication is admirable, and he seems to think for himself instead of hewing to one party line or another which could be why he attracted such nasty (but departed) opposition.

Personally, I think that is the worst option. These are supposed to be democratically elected positions and this would throw that out the window. I really hope Sarah realizes what a shitty situation she has put people in, but given the Cap Times editorial, she probably feels the same way and could really give a rats ass.

I plan to vote for the same person I voted for in the primary.

This essential issue is this: Ananda Mirilli would be a candidate whose name would be on the April ballot for school board if Sarah Manski had only withdrawn from the race before her name went on the Feb. 19 primary ballot instead of withdrawing just days after the Feb. 19 primary.

The essential question is this: Has there been fraud, misrepresentation, and/or misconduct by any party involved in this election?

And it just keeps getting skeezier:

Mirilli shared an old email exchange Wednesday, before announcing that she would not pursue a write-in campaign, as many observers had been urging.

The emails date back to December, when Ben Manski, Sarah Manski’s husband and fellow liberal activist, tried to solicit support for Manski’s School Board run from Latinos United for Change and Advancement. In an email to Salvador Carranza, president of LUChA, Ben Manski described Mirilli as having been recruited by “the former head of a Bradley Foundation-founded group that promotes the corporate takeover of public education.”

Mirilli told me her campaign was haunted by the idea that she was pro-voucher and anti-union, even though she says she is doubtful of the efficacy of vouchers and was not recruited by Caire as the local grapevine seemed to have everyone convinced.

Of course the Manski's wouldn't comment. Well, I guess they'll get to infect another town with their self righteous agenda. Assholes.

"There's racism in every school in Madison, and a lot of the achievement gap is about racism. It's ridiculous to see how long it's been going on. The question is: what are we going to do about it? How do we hold elected officials, and ourselves, accountable?" Mirilli said then.

Confronting the role of race in academic achievement got her labeled as pro-voucher and anti-union [by Manski]? How does that add up? Mirilli asks. No one labeled former Superintendent Dan Nerad pro-voucher and anti-union when he told the Madison community it's about race, she points out.

When you say "another town," the implication is that this town has been infected by their self-righteous (and, I might add, racialist) agenda. Can you please elaborate on what your understanding of that agenda is?

Thanks. That pretty much sums up what I was trying to say. As I said before, I've never really liked Ben because I always felt his intentions were disingenuous and that he was only "in it" for himself and not the good of the community.

So what's the plan now that Mirilli has said she won't run as a write-in? Do we just kiss John Matthews' ring and vote for the other MTI candidate, Mertz? Sarah Manski's name is still on the ballot, right? As Stu says upthread, if she gets the most votes, the school board appoints someone to the seat. Maybe they would appoint former Mayor Dave. Or Stu. I'd rather have either of those guys than Mertz. http://media.cityofmadison.com:8093/med ... f9a881c71d

Who's "we?"

Each person reading this has his or her own agenda, which may or may not overlap with yours, in selecting a candidate to vote for.
